  • Do not underexpose–just the opposite open up an extra 1/3 (maybe that’s a matter taste).

Bring tape, but really it’s not that tough.

There’s a switch on the back of the camera for recording to either p2 or tape, and there’s a useful chart on page 129 called “Recording Format.” When you get to your tape, you’ll want to shoot “480i/24PA over 60i.” The “A” means advanced pull down.

Go to page 98 and there’s a flow chart of the menu system. Go to page 106 for Rec Format (Tape). The default is 480i/60i. You want 480i/24PA. Menu (by hitting the button marked menu) > (toggle with the VCR keypad) Recording Set up > Rec Format (tape)

For P2, flip the switch on back to P2, and turn the dial to Scene5.
    Set the following:

Scene file > Operation type > Film
Display Functions > Level Meter “Select ON to display the audio level meter.”
    Recording Setup > Rec Format > 720P/24PN
Display Setup > Zoom Focus > mm/feet (to display an approximate focus distance)

Overall, it’s a very user friendly camera.

  • [editor4yourfilm] “1) does the P2 import feature in FCP 5.1 have a “default” set to 29.97? Was there anything I could have done to get 23.98 from this import tool, or is this setting fixed with the way it was shot with the camera?

    No, no, yes.

    2) What is the best way to deal …

It really depends what your output is going to be. The dilemma is the pull down. Some one else can verify and clarify, but I believe you need a capture card (like Blackmagic or Kona) to execute the pull down from 1080i60 to 720p60. Compressor will work pretty well to change your formatting, which will work well for DVD or Web.

Is the story about heaven, or thoughts, or something else…so that the extra head room is a metaphor?

Be sure to get an insert shot of the moon. Human psychology goes a long way to create the illusion, to suspend disbelief. To complement that illusion stop down until the blacks are really black.

There’s three a/v output selects: 480i, 720p, 1080i. If you choose to monitor 480i, you are not monitoring your signal to P2.

There’s a focus assist button, which is helpful. Also you can turn on the focus distance meter, so it displays in the monitor. I still measure to subject and check the numbers. There’s also a “autofocus” trigger. I keep the camera on manual and then set up the shot and the hit the trigger to focus. (It’s slow and doesn’t really follow well at all.)

Pick up this month’s American Cinematographer. There’s a long article about it.

I hear ya there, can’t figure why anyone would offline/online, either. Honestly, I don’t even know how to do it. I offload my footage on to a p2 store (which I love), and then I ingest from there.

Just a heads up: p2 can also record in dv to the p2. You’d gain about 4 times the footage because dv is 25mb/s and DVCPRO HD is 100mb/s. That might be a good strategy for a documentary. If this is the case, then the footage was not downconverted, per se. It was captured that way.

Sorry to be pedantic, but when you said “film,” I thought you meant Kodak 5218, not video. The medium you shoot on will be a heavy consideration for your fee. There are several ways to get paid for this. Invoice NET 30. Invoice NET 10. Due upon Receipt. There are couple of ways to bid the job also. Fixed Cost plus Fee. Firm Bid. Check out aicp.com for much more information, including some contracts. You can charge hourly, daily, weekly, by the job, by equipment. You’ll also want to clarify exactly what deliverable they expect. At the very least, write this stuff down and have them sign it.
