This may seem basic to some of you…

I am editing a short film shot on Varicam in a 24p timeline. The specs for the clips (captured from an aj-1200 deck) in my timeline is listed as being compressed with DVCPRO HD 720p60 codec, at 960X720 and 23.98 fps. The director got pick-up shots using HVX200. Even though the cameraman was told to shoot 24p, the pickup shot clips (after being rendered in the 23.98p timeline) show up as being compressed using DVPPRO HD 1080i60 codec at 1280X1080 and 29.97fps.

    Questions:

    1) I had to do the transferring from the P2 card using my Intel Macbook Pro (with FCP 5.1) because the FCP 5.0 which was on the G5 on which we were editing did not recognize the files (anyone else had this problem?). My question is: does the P2 import feature in FCP 5.1 have a “default” set to 29.97? Was there anything I could have done to get 23.98 from this import tool, or is this setting fixed with the way it was shot with the camera?

    2) What is the best way to deal with these DVCPRO HD 1080i60 clips in my 24p timeline? SInce the rest of the movie is 720p60, would I need to re-import these clips using the import P2 tool under a different setting if possible (discussed above)? If this is not recommendable/possible, then how can I convert the frame rate and size of these clips so that their motion look smooth in my 24p timeline?

I am a newbie at dealing with 1080i footage, so any help will be greatly appreciated!

    No, no, yes.

It really depends what your output is going to be. The dilemma is the pull down. Some one else can verify and clarify, but I believe you need a capture card (like Blackmagic or Kona) to execute the pull down from 1080i60 to 720p60. Compressor will work pretty well to change your formatting, which will work well for DVD or Web.
