p2 onlining
Posted by Superjew1492 on February 26, 2007 at 6:45 pmhi, thanks for the blog. great service. i’m taking over the finishing of a documentary that was shot on p2 and downconverted to dv for editing for god knows what reason. this is my first time working with p2. is there an easy way to online at full res back to the p2 originals?

February 26, 2007 at 7:17 pmAs long as the clip names haven’t changed, what you’ll have to do is reimport ALL of the clips and then see if FCP will reconnect to them. P2 footage doesn’t really adhere to the typical offline/online workflow, as with tape you can capture only what is used in the cut. You can’t do that when importing P2 footage…the whole clip or nothing. Unless you manually do it, noting the exact IN and OUT points, but that is a pain.
So take the drive with the DV files offline, import all the footage from the originals…unless you still have the original imports, in which case just connect that drive(s) and reconnect.

February 27, 2007 at 7:43 pmJust a heads up: p2 can also record in dv to the p2. You’d gain about 4 times the footage because dv is 25mb/s and DVCPRO HD is 100mb/s. That might be a good strategy for a documentary. If this is the case, then the footage was not downconverted, per se. It was captured that way.

February 27, 2007 at 7:58 pmDV is 13GB/hour at 29.97…DVCPRO HD is 23GB per hour at 720p23.98. That is only TWICE the amount of space. If you shoot 59.94, then yes, it is 4x the space. But most the people I know use the 720p23.98 setting.
Don’t go thru the pain of offlining then onlining. Not worth it. Drives are cheap…cheaper than your time fixing the online.

February 27, 2007 at 9:14 pmI hear ya there, can’t figure why anyone would offline/online, either. Honestly, I don’t even know how to do it. I offload my footage on to a p2 store (which I love), and then I ingest from there.
