Which tool does the job you are doing? Are you going to spend $100k plus on a Symphony Nitris, but never use the color correction, multicam editing, 3d and sapphire effects? If you are mainly doing “magazine” style jobs with nothing more than a few lower thirds and minimal effects, a Sym Ni would be like hiring a Mack truck to ship a twinkie – waaay more tool than you need. In that scenario, you could get Final Cut Studio 2 and a Mini Cooper (better for shipping twinkies) for the same price.

Best way to decide – get on both as often as you can. Take classes, rent one for a job. The system that generates less cursing is probably the right one. Call tech support for both (I spent 45 minutes on hold with tech support Friday – more cursing…)

Listen to Terrence, Bob and other gurus on the forums – can you live with the recurring issues that you find them encountering with that system?

How’s that for muddying the waters?

[tcurren] “Haven’t actually converted between DNxHD and uncompressed so I can’t say. What’s wrong wiht the traditional offline / online workflow. 4 tsreams of DNxHD 36 should be easy to handle and it looks really good.”

Neither have I! I agree that the offline / online workflow is most likely the best method (also allows for a more critical “upres” capture). Also on this system, DNxHD 145 will playback and edit in multicam line mode, and looks great.

The conversion questions are just part of this Super’s quest for efficiency, I’m sure that I’ll be exploring these options (and more) at length this week.

The real question then, would be my multicam workflow.

Can I capture uncompressed, edit my timeline in DNxHD (for multicam functions), then output uncompressed?

What is the conversion/render time while up/down converting (ballpark)?

It does say four streams – of DNxHD, but no mention of uncompressed multicam. Thanks, TCurren. Time to talk to the Super…
