Which is best Avid of Final Cut Pro? I’ve always been interested in knowing which software is best and why? Are they universal binary based or intel based?

Are you muckraking here? This is like asking whether a Mac or PC is better, you are guaranteed to get a fight.

They each have strengths and weaknesses and which is best depends upon your workflow.

If you are unfamiliar with both Final Cut Pro and AVID, you should take a course in both products, and learn something about them, before asking questions like this.

Of course, there is always that opening at McDonnalds that is still available.

Or Bob’s ice cream truck. 😉

Okay, but not wanting to start a fight.

Avid editing systems are professional tools used by the majority of editors of feature films, broadcast and professional TV around the planet.

Final Cut Pro on the other hand is used by many home enthusiasts and some professionals.

not wanting to start a fight ? Considering that both Mr. Curren and myself have spent the last 15 years doing nothing but AVID work until recently, and making our livings every day with AVID equipment, your response is one of the most stupid, ignorant, biased statements I have ever heard. Don’t worry Mr. Hewitt, there will be a position available at the french fry machine for you. If I had any class (and I don’t) I would have simply stated that your information is inaccurate.

With that said, the AVID Adrenaline is a fantastic editing system, as is the AVID Symphony/Nitris.

Bob is right. And I’m going to miss my Symphony when the world goes FCP and Premiere. But it is happening whether we like it or not. Avid management screwed the pooch.

Which tool does the job you are doing? Are you going to spend $100k plus on a Symphony Nitris, but never use the color correction, multicam editing, 3d and sapphire effects? If you are mainly doing “magazine” style jobs with nothing more than a few lower thirds and minimal effects, a Sym Ni would be like hiring a Mack truck to ship a twinkie – waaay more tool than you need. In that scenario, you could get Final Cut Studio 2 and a Mini Cooper (better for shipping twinkies) for the same price.

Best way to decide – get on both as often as you can. Take classes, rent one for a job. The system that generates less cursing is probably the right one. Call tech support for both (I spent 45 minutes on hold with tech support Friday – more cursing…)

Listen to Terrence, Bob and other gurus on the forums – can you live with the recurring issues that you find them encountering with that system?

How’s that for muddying the waters?

I have responded to Mr. Hewett so aggresively because I have seen people like him my entire career. He is a professional, probably with years of experience on the AVID. He owns it (or his boss owns it), it does the job, and he sees “these new kids” getting Final Cut Pro. He has obseverd Final Cut Pro becoming more popular over the years, but surely it can’t do everything that the AVID can do. As a matter of fact, up until recently it couldn’t do a lot of what the AVID did.

    Until now.

This is just like the old film editors that said you couldn’t use video to cut a TV commercial. Or the on line Video editors (CMX editors) that said that AVID was a piece of crap, because these guys had million dollar rooms, and could run rings around the AVID. TO THIS DAY, you can do incredible REAL TIME 3D effects with a 4 channel Ampex ADO or Grass Valley Kalidescope, that you cannot do on ANY non linear edit system – AVID, FCP or otherwise. SO, where are these products today – IN THE DUMPSTER. And where are these editors today – they either learned AVID, or they are UNEMPLOYED (or are 60 years old working for the local TV station cutting news, recalling the good old days). AVID is now in this position, where Final Cut Pro has caught up, and OLD BAGS like Mr. Hewett CANT BE BOTHERED with all this newfangled nonsense, that “home enthuseasts” are using. Mr. Hewett is completely out of touch with reality, and what is going on in other post facilities, and other TV stations in his area, and around the country. I suffered to learn CMX, I suffered to learn AVID, and I suffered to learn Final Cut Pro. And when Final Cut Pro becomes outdated, I will suffer to learn something else – EVEN THOGUGH I AM OLD – this is the business – get used to it.
The gentleman that asked the original question wanted the easy way out – which is better – FCP or AVID. There is no answer to that – today, you have to know both if you are out in the real world. And for some of you, you may have to know and learn Adobe Premier, as Adobe Production Studio is very powerful. I thank the Lord that I don’t have a client base that uses Premier on a regular basis, becuase I can’t take learning another product – but if I had to – I would do it. I believe that Mr. Hewett has too much of a relaxed life, and needs some dicipline (and some intensive courses).

Hey, I am over 60 years old, recall the “good” old days, been in film all my working life, am working with AVID Adrenalines and still fully functioning. Cut me some slack, will ya?
