    Kari;

I cleaned up the code and made it a dockable panel. Put this new script in the ScriptUI panels folder and access it from the window menu.

  • [Dave LaRonde] “I also foresee a remarkably short time for existing developers to make it exceptionally easy to transition from Adobe apps to theirs.

I hope you’re right Dave. Have you seen the HitFilm2 Ultimate application? https://hitfilm.com

  • The moral dimension to this is interesting. What obligations (if any) exist between a software developer/marketer and its customers?

The discussion however has moved here:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/creativeclouddebate

There’s more heat than light and the same small group of people are responsible for making the most noise. The debate has all the markings of an echo chamber. The same objections repeated over and over. Some real vitriol and few definitive answers.

I’m no fan of the CC subscription model, and according to Adobe I’m in the minority. I’m going to wait this out and see what the options are in a few months. There’s no pressing need to move to CC.

[Charles Wickware] “which of the two is considered better?”

Tough call ask 5 people and you’ll get 8 answers. There are several professional applications Maya, C4D, 3DS Max, and some open source as well. Blender is an amazing free product and a good place to start.

Look at the examples of work done in Blender. As Walter says, if you’re working in After Effects and 3D, Cinema 4D is the way to go. Particularly now that C4D is integrated into After Effects CC.

I’ve written a script to do just that. It’s fairly crude but its effective. There are better scripts at aescripts.com, Zorro the Layer Tagger comes to mind.

If you’d like, here is the script. I assume no liability.

[Charles Wickware] “What’s the word on going this route as opposed to say working in Maya?

Maya is a dedicated 3D application with a myriad of modelling and animation features that are not available in Element 3d or After Effects.

Element 3D is a 3rd party add on for After Effects that allows the use of pre-made 3D Models (OBJ and C4D files) for animation using openGL rendering. It is very nimble, well implemented for use in After Effects but far more limited than a 3D application.

[Todd Kopriva] “Ridley, could you ask a specific question so that we know what we’re responding to?

The MacPerformance Guide blog raises many concerns about the legal agreement. He provides his own interpretation.

    https://macperformanceguide.com/blog/2013/20130508_1a-Adobe-legal-agreement.htm

According to his interpretation of the agreement (ie not mine) Adobe can refuse service for any reason it deems fit with no legal recourse on the part of the subscriber, can raise the cost of subscription at any time without notice, can use any work you store in the cloud for its own advertising purposes without compensation to the creator and much more. Is this correct?

[Steve Forde] “What I will not do is subscribe to idle speculation, fear mongering or a general desire for scandal. I will just simply say that we feel very strongly that what we are doing is the right move for both Adobe and our customers – end stop.

I’m interested in knowing whether the concerns raised on the MacPerformance Guide blog are legitimate – or is this some of the fear mongering you refer to?

I have no desire to spread rumours or falsehoods regarding CC and the subscription plan.

I understand that Adobe would not have made this change if it did not consider it the appropriate business decision. I don’t think the sky is falling but would like to understand all the implications of subscribing to the CC.

[Charles Wickware] “QUESTION 1: Is there a way of connecting the ship to the end point of the stroke path so I don’t have to basically redraw the path with the ship’s motion? If so how?

There are several methods. Here’s one:

Select the path property in the shape layer and click on the word Path and copy.

Now click on the Position property for the ship and paste.

You’ll now have what are known as Roving keyframes for the ships position. There will be 2 diamond shaped keyframe icons, move either of these diamond shaped icons to adjust the timing. These are linear keyframes.

You may need to select the ship and choose Layer > Transform > Auto-Orient to make the ship face the path.

[Charles Wickware] “QUESTION 2: How the heck to do I get the camera to zoom into and on the moving ship?

Look up nested compositions or if you are really using a camera, then look up controlling a camera with a null object.

This really made my hair stand on end.

The legal agreement for CC is Draconian. They require you Date of Birth, can raise the price at any time without warning and there is no guarantee of continued access to the product or service.
