All you said is correct. The bigger the file to reference with Pan & Zoom, the further you can zoom in without degredation. If simply importing and creating MXF/OMFI media file, then you would want the resolution to be equal or greater than your project resolution – SD 4×3 NTSC = 720×540(486) would be smallest resolution of the image to fill the screen.

We use MC 5.0 Adrenaline, XP SP3 – We export reference files for Sorenson and can use them freely without closing Avid. You cannot rename reference files and have them still reference the media. You should be able to rename AV files immediately and freely use them at will. Our media is on Facilis terraBlock partitions mounted via fibre. I know this doesn’t answer your question but may give you info. to help resolve.

Windows Media Player 11 offers enhanced security features on the Security tab of the Options dialog box:
Show local captions when present. Windows Media Player supports Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange (SAMI) captioning of media content. SAMI content can be located on the Internet, your hard disk, or your CD or DVD. During playback, Windows Media Player accesses the content to locate and display SAMI captions. Enabling this option allows access to SAMI content in all of the content zones available to your computer. Clearing this option will limit access to the Internet zone. This option is turned off by default.

The good news is, it isn’t a DVD problem. I remember a link deep on the site of Microsoft about this issue but I can’t easily find it at the moment.

Thanks, I haven’t tried transcoding. I did change the project format, then exported – looks bad or even worse. Sometimes shortcuts work, most of the time I just get what I pay for.

I had no idea about that on MAC burners! I solved my problem by just not highlighting the text – I used a pointer to the side as well as a hollow box around the text that appears when selected, then changes color when activated. thanks for your input!

Is it possible something is happening between 1280×720 and transcoding to 720×480 w/16×9 flag, since the actual PSD Menu is not really “transcoded”? —- if that is what Encore is doing?

If I understand you correctly, I am experiencing the same thing. PSD Menus look flawless and when checking preview highlights in Encore they are matching perfectly. I am thinking 2 issues at the moment. 1) Font type or 2) they are motion menus and something is happening after they are rendered.
I am authoring SD, 16×9 DVD. My sources are QT .mov from AE at 1280x720p 29.97 and menus in PS are 1280×720. All video is transcoded 6.5mbps, WS, Progressive – this includes the motion menu video.
Any ideas at this point would be very helpful as my deadline is today.

Our workflow, PC, Avid MC5, Encore CS4: Export QT Ref. from Avid. Open Encore, drag in ref. file, “Interpret Footage As” – conform to WS. Let Encore encode. This is very fast for us. Often I will export 48k wav from Avid with the QT ref. file and use in Encore timeline, not transcoding audio.
I then take the QT ref. file into Sorenson: Raw SQ. Pixels (Sorenson verifies source is 720×486) QT, H.264, 6mbps, Same As Source, Crop of -4 Top, -2 Bottom. This gives us what we call our master file. This “master” file can be used to make other files as needed or dropped into encore later when Avid media is offline. I would not find this “master” file acceptable in the broadcast world. I realize there are many ways to save & create much higher quality master files but we have many limitations of space, personnel, money and no real demand for higher quality – when and if we do, we of course modify our workflow.
