I’m sorry – I have no knowledge to help you – never heard of this “bluray motion blur” or “DVD motion blur”.
If you want to keep your 23.976 fps then you must edit quality presets and manually select the transcode, in Encore, to 23.976fps – you cannot use default nor apply an edited transcode as the default.
Your original posts said Encore automatically does a pulldown, changing from 24 to 30 – I simply said you can override that by editing quality presets.

Absolutely that WILL work – we have freelance editors and I cannot always control the codecs – thanks for jarring my memory. Do a DNxHD mixdown and a QT ref from that will defintely work unless you have a more serious problem with Sorenson.

I can’t explain the process but it can be done in Encore. A person here did that and I saw it work (they are no longer here). I don’t know the process. Space is very limited to short video’s (maybe 20 +/- minutes).

I’ve had this problem with certain codecs within Avid, like DVCProHD – never had an issue with DNxHD media – it seems while codecs are on computer and work within Avid and QT that Sorenson still does not recognize them. I ran into a confusing issue with Sorenson, something to do with ffshow or something like that – sorry I don’t have a clearer understanding as I ran out of time to troubleshoot and decided to make everything DNxHD related to avoid the issue all together.

Oh – you can transcode and you can name the clips and/or subclips anything you want – that is great!
I have not done a low-res transcode of a linked file then tried to hi-res later. Seems there was a discussion about that but I am not knowledgeable in that workflow. Fortunately we have plenty of space to hi-res the first time.

Maybe someone else can weigh in – I may have confused the matter.
If you are just logging clips and making subclips, an editor should be able to handle the other stuff such as transcoding and relinking or whatever works for them.
I would simply link to the files you have, make subclips (naming them whatever makes sense to you) logging notes about what you want where – that simple to get your work done. IF you must be the one to transcode, then when you have created all your subclips and they are the only footage you want to use, then select all of the subclips you make and transcode them to low res. – that easy.
If you don’t do this then I suspect you have a big learning curve to go through first before you get any work done.

You shouldn’t rename the files .new – Avid does that automatically when it transcodes.
When AMA Linking – you must link to an entire file, you cannot link to part of a file – suppose you have a 10 minute file but only want 5 minutes from the middle …. link to the entire file, make a 5 minute subclip and transcode only the subclip for editing. (You must realize that Avid does not really edit well, if at all, from AMA linked video).
When I link to a file and then transcode, I have 2 clips in the bin – the AMA link to the file and a new clip that has been transcoded to Avid Media, thus it is no longer necessary to keep the “AMA Linked” clip because you cannot edit with it anyway with flawless playback.

AMA link to volume and/or all clips. Select all and transcode. When transcode is complete, the “linked” files should still all be highlighted AND have the “link” icon (which is different from the transcoded files that have “.new” extention on the name) – simply hit the delete key, dialogue with only one option comes up which asks if you want to delete “Master Clips” select this and say yes – you will only be deleting the “AMA Link” to those files and will not be deleting the files themselves, neither will you be deleting the “new” clips nor their Avid Media Files.
The transcode option when you select transcode will give you options as to the resolution at that time. You should edit and subclip from the transcoded files (although you can work with AMA linked files first but you must then, at a later date after transcoding, relink the edits or subclips to the transcoded media).

I may be confused and/or I may have misread the original post. I have done Blu-ray, then switched to DVD – therefore I will transcode twice within Encore, one for Blu-ray and one for DVD. No matter which I am doing, I edit quality presets to have control over transcoding. Say you have 3 assets (videos) File 1 is 720p 59.94, File 2 is 16×9 SD 29.97fps, and File 3 is 720p 23.976 (24fps) – All of these will work fine on DVD. I try to set transcoding as close to the original file as possible, so for File 1 I use: Progressive, Widescreen, 29.97. For File 2 I use: UpperField, Widescreen, 29.97. For File 3 I use: Progressive, Widescreen, 23.976 (24fps).
The DVD does not specify globally what the frame rate is – that is determined by each video file and the fps with which it was transcoded.
Maybe this helps and/or maybe I’m crazy – I may not explain it well, I only know what works for us. 🙂

Encore CS4 and CS5 allows me to transcode at 24fps (23.976) – It does not automatically pulldown if you select the proper transcoding settings. We do 24fps DVD’s all the time.
