An expert will need to help you because I may be very wrong in thinking that Encore will not do this. I believe you will need a full spec authoring program like scenarist, Blu-print or others to do this … DVD Studio Pro may give you these options. Sorry not much help.

I believe “Unmatted” is what you want but you might try matted – That was what stumped me when going to Avid…but I also used a different codec because I thought I read DNxHD did not support alpha from AE – glad to hear from John that they do – I will need to experiment now!

In the “old” days I would say it is a phasing problem – might be worth looking into. I don’t know if MC still has a phase reversal button, seems like I remember it did in the early days but I haven’t encountered a phase problem in a long time.

Shane – this thread brings up a question I have had for some time now:
Using the above as example, what’s the benefit to creating a 24p project, linking and transcoding then bringing in footage to the 29.97 project and opening the bin – won’t the footage get transcoded again on rendering or exporting? As you say, it should work fine linking and transcoding (also converting fps) all in one fell swoop – Is it cleaner one way over the other?

I would suggest using a bit-rate calculator to determine what bit-rate the video must be encoded to fit onto a single layer DVD, then manually set that bit-rate in something like AME – (note that using variable bit-rate-VBR is not an exact science like Constant bit-rate-CBR). – use of AC3 will allow the video to be encoded at a higher bit-rate.
I made a bit-rate calculator in Excel Spreadsheet using mathematical equations from the old Maestro days that has never failed me and includes calculations for DVD Rom assets, but it is simple and is setup for CBR encoding. Also I have found that my AC3 audio inside of Encore must be kept at default 192mbps in order to play – for some reason (on my setup) when I try to increase the bit-rate above 192 I lose audio on playback.

Just for grins, as a small test, do a video mixdown of about 10-15 seconds of part of your sequence … making sure the mixdown is rendered in 145 DNxHD, place the mixdown on a top layer in the sequence and export a QT ref of that or even a 30 second clip that includes the mixdown portion and see if it will play.

What are source clips details and what is your project type?

I am using color correction, have even tried BCC safe color effect – gamut errors disappear until I render – could it have something to do with the codec I’m rendering to, which is dnxhd145 – I’ve even went into media creation settings and tried same as source checked and unchecked.
