January 15, 2016 at 4:10 pm in reply to: Converting HD to SD Using Avid?

We just had the Ad Agency request our HD video to be SD Letterboxed. We were in 1080p 29.97. Can’t we simply change the project type to 720×486 NTSC and copy sequence and do a video mixdown and export? Main question is do we need a totally separate project or can we simplt change the project type within the same project?

We had the same issue but we use dongles. We logged onto the online Avid Master Account where the renewal was slow to be updated but finally came through. Our Dongle info. in the App manager still showed out of date but we downloaded the Dongle Updater File and when we updated through the App manager all was well.

    Hi Michael,
I am experiencing this same issue just today. All works well except when I go to relink. I’m trying to do all this directly from the XDCam disk and have not copied the disk to a hard drive … therefore it is not seeing the disk as an available drive. Is there a workaround for this besides copying the disks to a drive?

System specs? Project specs? Have you tried moving through the sequence with the video track monitor turned off in the timeline. Maybe as you say it has something to do with imports and/or effects. Could be corrupt media, corrupt sequence. I’ll be glad to look at sequence – with project specs you could email me the bin that contains the sequence.

Be sure to tell Encore not to transcode under transcode settings. I would think that even if it was set to auto-transcode that it would make the files fit the DVD so I’m not sure what is going on with the project.

First, I would make sure you have the project file and ALL assets and know where they are stored. I would open that project and verify you have everything and that the original project is ready to burn a completed DVD.

Second, I would “save as”, adding “revised audio” to the name. I would open that project and verify it is complete and ready to burn. Although you indicate you do not need to revise the menu, I personally would check to see that I have the font used in the menus “just in case”.

Third, I would delete the video transcodes and I would delete the assets and timelines within the project. I would add the revised assets (transcode inside Encore or pre-Encore), create timelines and re-link/re-author.

Pay special attention to note if Closed Captions and/or Subtitles are involved – these are assets as well.

I have done this before but the first step is the most important – you cannot go wrong if enough attention to detail is followed closely in the first step of assessing the project. I would also pay attention to the bitrates, audio formats and frame rates.

With SN for programs, I believe you can download most if not all from Avid but you must create a Master Account. When logged into Master account there are many downloads available. Sorenson may be the exception and you may need to go to their website, again, probably need to setup account with them. I know when using Sorenson and getting the free MP3 codec that I must log in to the Sorenson account to get it.

I reserve the right to be wrong!

Try Sequence Refresh – I would select “All” under that option. (I believe you just right click and look for that item)

Bring in MOV file, if on PC, right click and select New Timeline.

  • Thanks for this good info. Looked like you ran through every setting and attempt, leaving nothing out and nothing to chance. I could see no errors in your attempts and logic. These issues are the hardest to troubleshoot. Your info. is greatly appreciated for future reference!
