I’ll take em one at a time….
Capacity. As I mentioned we build capacity based on the project. Ranging from 1TB-6TB per project, we currently mirror two 2TB drives for projects, and stripe two 2TB drives for media (speed). This is why we want to go RAID 5 – 4 2TB drives for 6TB of redundant/ fast enough space. Each project we buy 4 2TB WD drives at $150/drive – bill the client $600 for drive/archive/ect. Piggy bank a couple small jobs together so they don’t eat the entire cost.
Performance. We work mainly in Proress 422 HD. Uncompressed 10bit would be nice – but not crucial at this time. Using the SATA connection with 4 drives RAID 5 we should be fine.
Connectivity. We have Sata in the machines – but having FW is nice as well. If you mean sharing, it would be just a quick apple share to transfer files off occasionally. We don’t need shared storage.
Reliability is key – which is why I’m looking for recommendations/real life stories of the difference between the OCW and the sonnet enclosures – since the price for each is so different.
Support. We’re pretty tech heavy guys so we can handle the day to day operations – but if the systems are failing we’d obviously like some tech support.
Warranty. OWC has two prices for their enclosures- the basic is a 2 year support, the professional is 5 year. Due to Moores law – I don’t expect equipment to last more than 3 years.
Budget. Pricing out 4TB enclosures – OWC’s are $799 and the Sonnet are $1595 If you jump to an 8 drive at Sonnet (if I really need the speed for uncompressed it is $3995
SO again – trying to spend as little as possible so I can save up for a $60k SAN – I’m leaning towards the OWC – but I’m afraid of the expression “you get what you pay for” so the question was….
Does anyone have any real world stories of either of these products. The only negative I heard about the OWC enclosures was that with FW800 connections the speed is only 40MB write. But I plan on using the Sata connections – so I should be good – again for proress422 HD

Hey guys, Thanks for the quick responses.
As I mentioned, we are currently just looking for attached storage enclosures. We rarely work on the same projects at the same time, but we do often take the project between the two different stations. So popping out a drive array and swapping it in another enclosure seems to work fine. When projects are done, we then archive the files and reformat the RIAD and start again with another project.
I realize this a SAN board, but we’re not really looking into shared drives. I have built/bought and worked in many environments with full fibre SAN setups, but we are trying to grow slow and keep our overhead to a minimum. And Matt, as I mentioned I am familiar with ethernet based sharing systems (Apple file sharing), and we’re not interested in those systems at this time. We just need recommendations for decent direct attached RAID enclosures.

It would be a temporary Back-Up, with an Archive directly to BR with one click. I don’t buy that disc media shelf life is not as long as LTO. Nothing lasts forever, and technology changes so the device to play media comes and goes as well. I’ve never had to go back to a project more than 5-6 years old. Most of the projects I work on would be “dated” by 5 years. I have binders of DVDs of archived projects and I’ve never (knock on wood) had any issues reading them.
Blue Ray Discs are a bout $1 a piece not $5 a piece, and this drive/burner combo is $700 compared to a DLT machine which is $3-5k. Not to mention I would need to have a dedicated machine hooked up to the DLT drive.
I’m not a large facility with tons of media and tons of edit bays. I’m just looking for a simple solution to ensure the projects are being archived. Since media sizes are getting better, DVDs are becoming cumbersome spanning across lots of discs. I thought Blue Ray would at least help – plus the fact that it is a NAS makes it easy to toss the files onto (it could auto back-up each night). Again – each station has a mirrored RAID “project” drive that keeps the projects redundant at the local level. So this would mean all the projects are on 4 drives – plus a BlueRay copy. Heck, as I fill up the RAID I could even just put new drives in and keep the drives on the shelf too!

October 28, 2010 at 12:18 am in reply to: How can I create rolling DVD discs like on those exercise infomercials?P90X was done in 3d, but Insanity and TurboJam were done in after effects. Just be careful with motion blur in ae. It can cause issues with the two layers (front and back). Also, reflections can only be faked in ae, which is why p90x was done in 3D.

I’m actually doing all the 3d/ graphics for the next show right now

So I found a post on the Cow that was similar to this – where they added the Multi Shader, loaded the movie, clicked “To Layers”. Applied that to the matrix object, then added a step deformer with the color selected.
But, this would work with a one sided object – since the material is applied to the matrix object and not the object being cloned.
With your method – how/where do I adjust the start frame? Or is there a way to select the “shader #” on each object?

BTW – I originally did the animation with an XREF of the screen then a cloner object with a matrix and a shader deformer doing the flip. But then I couldn’t put individual materials on each screen.
So now I have a project with 90 object, each inside a fracture object which uses the shader object to do the flip.
There must be something I’m missing right?

I think it is a 32 bit / 64 bit issue. BTW I am using R10 — so I downloaded the R10.111 upgrade. Didn’t solve the issue.
I tried a different user and got an error that said “C4D version does not match Resource Folder”. So I reinstalled the upgrade from that user account. The crash still happens. So I went back to the orriginal account. When I launched CS4 I got the error again about the mismatching resource folder, so I reinstalled the upgrade again from this user.
The original issue still occurs.

Still crashes even when starting with shift key pressed. It will crash when I try to add a material, or do a render preview.

Bare with me – im on my ipad and my site is only in flash so I’m going off memory here —- but If you go to my website – https://www.ricksebeck.com then click on work, then click on tradeshows you will see some of the multiscreen projects I’ve done. The Siemens projects the one I was specifically talking about.
