You have interesting observations about Garageband. It’s similar when one also looks at iMovie for the iPad/iPhone/iPod touch in the iTunes App Store and compared it to the iMovie for the desktop in the Mac App Store, there are many similarities in both versions but also many differences, particularly as relate to the different displays the applications are designed to support. I don’t see that having FCP X on an iPad would mean Apple is abandoning the desktop; it’s more mobile on the iPad and that could be used to one’s advantage as has been described elsewhere. And it might only cost $49… who knows?

They would not be a replacement for serious NLE work, but still might be useful even for serious NLE editors and producers I would imagine, especially when it could interface to the desktop version. It certainly would not mean Apple is abandoning the desktop but augmenting how you can work and remain connected to your work wherever you are.

Obviously many people are not afraid of or insulted by the possibilities and if some products on some platforms are not useful for others, that’s fine too. I’m sure you’ve noticed over the years consumer products like Garageband have become increasingly powerful and likely will continue to do so. As mobile processors and graphics ‘cards’ also increase in their speeds and capabilities, it may be quite surprising in a few years to see what can be accomplished as you lie on the couch on your day off from work. Certainly this vision of being connected always is even removing the concept of a day off work—you are still free to leave everything behind and head to the beach with the family, but if inspiration strikes, it could be nice to explore it on your iPad before you return to the office.

Apologies for the iPhone induced typos. I meant to say “storyline” not “stirrings”. Auto correction isn’t always helpful.

Simply use the new Crop tool on multiple clips such as the main stirrings and other clips above that. Why stop with only a split screen as this should allow you to gave more than two clips displaying simultaneously in their respective area of the screen.

Andrew, thanks for posting the actual legal limitations. For commercial users, it’s not the “one person per machine” as I thought. The key is one license per user and that user can use one or more machines such as a desktop and laptop etc. Non-commercial users can use a license on all the machines they control such as a desktop and iPad 3. Okay that last example is looking to the future.

Yes and no. Here’s a link to the Apple Discussions forum that says you can on up to five machines using the same Apple ID:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3132218

However I did read somewhere that this does not apply to commercial users who can call Apple to arrange for volume purchases. Physically it will work and it appears to be acceptable as there is no restriction imposed by Apple other than the honour system if you are a business / commercial enterprise. Technically the commercial users are one license per machine but this may assume you have a significant number of staff to supply with FCP X on those machines as opposed to a sole operator who is only going to use one machine at a time. Call Apple to be sure if you want.

July 6, 2011 at 2:43 pm in reply to: FCP7 and FCPX on Mac OS 10.7 LION is bad idea

Everest, Apple published a recommended best practice article June 27, 2011 related to installs of FCP X if you already have FC Studio 3. Both methods of using the same or different partitions are described. If the same partition for both applications is used, the trick is simply opening and closing Motion 4 before any other FCP Studio app is used:

  • Several good points posted here and in related threads. Nice to know there’s some counterpoint to this nastiness that’s rampant in the last ten days and will likely continue for perhaps a few months. Of course this first iteration is not a replacement for FCP 7 for everyone, but if the naysayers are taking the time to read the posts that are extolling some of the virtues of FCP X, some may have second thoughts and continue to use FCP 7 where needed until FCP X release 10.2 for example. I’d certainly wait a few weeks from the release date to see the impact of Mac OS X 10.7 just in case the lion really roars. I’ve read many early complaints that were simply incorrect and demonstrated a lack of understanding of FCP X’s methods and techniques. Now we’re seeing more tips and people taking the time to see if they can adapt the tool to fit their needs. True, it’s not ready for everyone yet, but we’re seeing that it may not be the disaster as portrayed.

According to this post, people are seeing their additional internal drives so may be a peculiar behaviour with RAID drives:
