A montage of the day, which will serve as the DVD autoplay movie. It might also be used as the DVD menu.

The ceremony, first dance, candids, whatever you think captures the day in the style you can pull off. That’s up to you and the contract you agree with.

Fast videographers turn around the montage as a Same Day Edit, or in the inbox on the next business day. Entire DVDs are done no quicker than two weeks and usually two months. Some take longer. Nightmare videographers can take a year.

August 10, 2008 at 6:19 am in reply to: Quickbooks or Quicken?

Funny thing I just two weeks ago found myself on month two of way to busy and hired a bookkeeper. The awesome thing was I was probably incorrectly using Quicken98 Home & Business and I hated it, so I let the bookkeeper install a fresh copy of QuickBooks 2008 Pro and start totally from scratch.

Two weeks (maybe 20 part-time hours total) and my books are in order and I just finished my first automatic GST (Canadian tax) with basically one button. I can see the light … and also can see the value of craigslist and hiring a local bookkeeper for a couple of bucks. 🙂

Maybe if someone set me up with H&B right in the first place I would be OK, but I get a feeling that QuickBooks is sort of the Avid of the accounting world. Kind of a bloated dog (takes like 20 seconds to boot up), kinda strange interface, lots of quirks (uh, features) but it’s the industry standard so deal with it and get on with life.

[Frank Picini] “I’m a designer and animator working in the TV business for 15 years”

    and

[Frank Picini] “I’m not sure what kind of money I should charge.”

…sorry something doesn’t add up. What have you been doing for 15 years? I’m kinda serious; help us figure out where you’re coming from and we can offer an educated suggestion.

An uneducated suggestion is $1K / second.

July 1, 2008 at 5:45 pm in reply to: Legal protection for a logo?

    [stan welks] “1.) You said:
“Your logo is your trademark so that’s automatically copyrighted, but the onus is on you to protect it.”

What do you mean by “protect it?” Do you mean protect if someone challenges you or is there some proactive strategy?

    Yes

    2.) You said:
“…and immediately get a tax number (or whatever in your province/state) and you’re set in a basic way. ”

What is a tax number? Why would I look into this?

As I said, depends on your jurisdiction.

3.) If someone challenges you, it’s dismissed fairly quickly if you can provide any docs that support you registered the name.

Do you mean domain name, or registering it through a lawyer?”

    Both.

Shoot one format, preferably HD. You will never regret that decision but will kick yourself once you start mixing and matching and end up settling for SD.

As far as your company name you have to get a lawyer to do a search and secure it in the markets you need it secured (ie: US, North America, Europe, etc). If you’re really serious incorporate your company name but if you’re “basically” spending what you earn most accountants will discourage incorporation.

Your logo is your trademark so that’s automatically copyrighted, but the onus is on you to protect it. Again, lawyers.

Or you can do a Google search and if nothing comes up register your domain and immediately get a tax number (or whatever in your province/state) and you’re set in a basic way.

If someone challenges you, it’s dismissed fairly quickly if you can provide any docs that support you registered the name.

June 27, 2008 at 1:50 am in reply to: Sponsors for Podcasts

You will need to develop a listener base first, and go after sponsors 12-18 months later at the earliest, assuming if you have a hit on your hands after this time.

They need to see longevity and quality. Podcast burnout is very common – most never see past the tenth weekly episode. The frequency often trails off too, and sponsors don’t like that at all.

Be incredibly focused, come out regularly, and the sponsors will come to you. Not necessarily with buckets of cash, but they figure out the real players quickly and easily, and after doing this for a year you will know the answer to your questions. Good luck!

June 4, 2008 at 7:09 pm in reply to: Scrolling Timeline in FCP – Hack???

…BTW that whole timeline grinding to a halt is so lame. Avid is the worst, FCP kinda fixed it a bit with adding the mixer for audio tweaks … but the absolute hands down winner is Vegas.

    sidebar

If you haven’t seen it, it’s pretty amazing. You can drag ins and outs while a clip is playing, you can set a looped play on a region and grab sound effects or video cutaways from a bin and drag them to the timeline WHILE IT’S PLAYING, and not skipping a beat. You can also slip and slide a clip like a sound effect while it’s looping to perfectly sync an effect. While a clip is playing, you can even right click drag to copy a lower third if a guy is talking a long time, all without stopping playback. The TLC only stops when you press the spacebar.
