I’m surprised no one uses this trick. I guess I get today’s FCP sticker.

While playing, just hit the zoom in or out and the screen will update. I typically use ‘-‘ more than ‘+’ to give me a better idea of what’s coming up. Playback will not stop. It’s not real time but gives you a really dynamic idea of what’s coming up.

Export from Avid as quicktime with DNxHD codec. Don’t make it a reference file, rather a standalone quicktime file (reference is a tiny file that point to the media on your local drive, not what you need).

The FCP won’t be able to play it RT but you can bring it into your timeline and cut it down or whatever, then render to whatever codec you like. I do cutdowns of larger Avid projects this way. I’m audio plays back RT, just video only refreshes on the monitor when I press stop or shuttle with the TLC.

Never heard of residual payment for editors.

I have heard of ‘deferred in whole or part’. Maybe he knows you should be paid $50/h but you’re getting $25/h and he’s feeling guilty.

You won’t see a dime either way, so go with an hourly you can live with and politely ‘defer’ the ‘deferral’.

May 6, 2008 at 3:06 am in reply to: DVD demo or web link

When introducing yourself or cold calling it’s always better to go with a DVD, nicely printed with bright colours. That way, if it’s lying around as is often the case the guy you sent it to won’t hire you, it’s the guy who found your disc lying around.

Same with a resume. Anyone I’ve hired was the result of looking at the resume stack with a cup of coffee and picking candidates.

Browsing on the web sounds like a great idea but we’re overwhelmed with information on the web, and I believe it’s two different processes between browsing the web and picking up the phone.

I have received work from my links on https://reel-exchange.com/members/8095fc63/profile
but I think you can’t go wrong dropping something off. It’s got a shelf life.

Kinda useless because last time I checked a “find” doesn’t return marker information.

So if a marker is called “red boat” and I do a search for “red” or “boat”, it won’t find anything, even though it’s there as a marked clip.

Earle, apologies to you for suggesting you are doing something wrong. And of course to the COW for the manure-language.

You have struck a nerve. I’m sorry to see you taken advantage of by these bozos that render work at full rez without getting a sign-off, and expect you to pay to re-render, plus suffer waiting when a small proxy quicktime would have sufficed.

Maybe your line of communication isn’t as clear as you think with your contractors.

I’m amazed that any animator or designer would take it upon themselves to render a full-rez animation without a low-rez sign off. Did they try to get to you or get through to the wrong person in the chain?

    You are hiring lazy animators.

Bullshit it takes long to render previews. They can render out wireframes if they’re still using their dad’s Amiga, or little sorenson quicktimes with a watermark while they’re playing World of Warcraft.

I am not a lazy animator, BTW.
