I just bought one. Originally I tried to order from the Sony site but shipping was around $45. I ended up calling Sony and ordering with an actual human. Shipping was around $12.

Mike, the EX1 will provide great images for you. I would strongly suggest using all manual controls however. I understand that going from a fully automatic consumer camera to a camera that is capable of fully manual professional images is a big step. You will definately find it worth the effort though. If you’re starting out by shooting yourself, you’ll have the time for a little trial and error. Take that time and get proficient at the process. As far as green screening, the EX1 recorded directly to SxS or SDHC at 35mbps/4:2:0 works very well. I green screen in After Effects using the Keylight plugin. I’ve tried hosing the HD-SDI out to my Matrox MXO-2 at Pro Res 422. It also works fine but if there’s any improvement over the SxS recorded signal, I can’t see it. So, at this point in time, I would say that it’s premature to be buying the Nano, unless you have a client that needs delivery of a higher codec than 35mbps.

The Hoodman, MxM and MxR adapters all work just fine. I just got a couple 32GB Transcend SDHC class 10 cards. They work perfectly (so far) and only cost $60 each.

Hi Joe, I responded to your earlier post and stated that I wanted to try the Blackmagic Design SDI to HDMI adaptor. I’m assuming that that’s the box you’re referring to. Is there something about it you don’t like other than the fact that it’s an add-on to the camera? I’m still considering it.

Regardless of the amount of tension relief or cable wrapping, I feel as if, due to the fragility of the connection, the connection would break again. Why pay $600 for a repair that, in all likelihood, would not last very long. Either a monitor with an SDI connection or using the adapter to get to HDMI seem to be a better solution.

My component output got trashed quite a while ago. One yank on the cable is all it took. I’ve decided not to get it repaired because it would just happen again…Not a very robust connector at all. I’m still considering getting a blackmagic design SDI to HDMI adaptor. It’s $500, I think, but would allow me to use the BNC output. Does anyone have experience with this adaptor?

The specs on the Transcend class 6 SDHC appear to be 8MBps (or 8 megabites per second) write speed. The write speed of Sony EX is 35Mbps (or 35 megabits per second). 8 Megabites is equivalent to 64 megabits. Plenty of headroom. If you haven’t already done so, update your EX3 firmware. The new update accomodates SDHC better. That being said, you might as well go with the new class 10 cards. Much faster and with the firmware upgrade should handle over and under cranking (although I haven’t tried myself).

This was a surprise for me as well. Under tungsten lighting, certain artificial materials will look brown instead of black. It has to do with what was described to me by a Sony tech (if memory serves) as trouble with near infrared. The chips have a wide color gamut (a good thing) but the down side is the black issue. There are filters that can pretty much eliminate this. I use the B+W 486. Tiffen also makes one.

There is no shutter to physically open or close. When the shutter is off, the camera doesn’t introduce the sync rate at the user designated setting.
