Hey Walter, when did you switch over to ProRes over DVCProHD? I always thought you were sticking with DVCProHD. Why the switch?

Snow Leopard is not going on our systems for a while. Lots of broken stuff and no real benefit that I could tell. Within two days I was back with my old Leopard. My first real awful experience with a Mac OS upgrade.

All of our Macs have three additional internal drives. We stripe two of them as a Raid 0 and digitize footage there. The other internal is for the project files. The fourth is the System drive. We also have an external four drive RAID that can be assigned to any of our Mac workstations via four SATA cables. Whichever Mac you plug them into gets the RAID locally.

All raw footage from tapeless systems is automatically backed up to a different backup drive for archive.

We also edit HD footage (mostly DVCProHD) over a gigabit ethernet network daily.

Make a new sequence and don’t set anything. Drag a clip from a bin to the new empty sequence and it will ask you if you want to match the sequence settings to the clip’s settings…click yes. Now check the sequence and see what it is set to…compare to your original settings and report back.

Does the AVID editor want them as 1920 x 1080 HD movies? If you download the AVID codec package you will be able to convert your Mac codec (uncompressed, ProRes or DVCProHD files) to AVID HD codec files pretty easily as a batch in Compressor or individually out of QT player or FCP.

Although we have a local office RAID as an FTP server, it is limited to our UPLOAD speed…in other words our fastest outgoing speed. When we had DSL it was impossibly slow if you were getting a large file remotely. It was great to copy the file to the RAID locally, sure, but clients commented on how slow it was.

We got Charter Cable with 10 meg down and 3 meg up and it’s better, but somehow our web hosting service is still faster downloading a file remotely…which also means it takes us longer to get files up!

So be careful about local FTP servers if your upload speed is slow…it will be slow for your clients!

Speed rules and will continue to rule!

Thanks Ken; Question. I have a MacPro Quad core intel with a Kona 3 card. Do you know which version of the control panel and which version of the Adobe utilities you have? Looks like I will have the Control Panel 6.0.3 and the Adobe CS4 plugs 6.0.3 to allow it to work under Leopard running FCP 6.0.5.

Sound right?

If you know that all source files and render files are on the local computer, then do a render and an audio mixdown and export a ref clip from your timeline. Quit FCP. Open compressor and drag the ref clip into the window. Set up your encode.

I think the compressor settings are more important than how compressor gets them, but it is well documented that the export straight to compressor is dicey.

Try it.
