I’ll bet Ivy is opening the main movie in QT player and selects an in and out. Then she copies the selection and pastes it into a new empty player window. Then she exports from that new clip. Sounds fine right? Well, by pasting into a new window she has only made a reference clip from the original, so in fact the slate is still part of the entire stream that the new clip can see.
In MPEG Streamclip you can mark an in and out and export only that portion of the movie and that new movie will not contain any trace of the original. I’ll bet if she saved the new ref clip to a new self contained movie, then opened that one and exported to her final the mysterious slate would be gone.
Try it and please report back.

We’ve been searching for a decent template as well. This is a Mac product I found that is very intuitive and looks good. We are trying to manipulate the code to fit a layout over the top of our existing site.

Also compositors might be working more on high end projects with larger budgets and graphic designers play in a wider range of budgets. Great census however….wonder if one was done for video/film editors.

First try a Goggle search and see if you can find a site that lists rates for shooting events…many times they do.
As for making the DVDs you can simplify the process by adding a DVD recorder to your tools. Simply output from the timeline to a DVD recorder assuming you have a Video output card. If not you’ll have to do the encode/author route.
$80 to me sounds pretty much the same as free. So yes, you are allowed to raise the price of entry.
BTW, no trouble recording long segments with the 7D?

When I post a reply I generally try to address the issue with a response that is for a more general audience…..little tidbits of wisdom I have learned along the way. I think that is the way the Cow is used. If someone stumbled along your dilemma and read my post they might have been able to relate to the bigger picture that I was addressing.
Even when communication seems to be going one way, we strive to get the flow going in both directions and hopefully strengthen the relationship as a rule. It has never hurt us and is a good way to do business.
Glad the issue was resolved.

This looked like a Vimeo stream with all the bumping and stuttering. But I think the client got a half price deal on this one. I agree, $10,000 sounds like cost to me, break even at best. Don’t think you could sustain a viable business for long with this model.
But the footage was pretty good….didn’t get a real sense for the editing with the bumpy stream.

Dysfunctional or not this is the communications business. Have you actually spoken to anyone about this. I think holding onto the elements puts you in the drivers seat for the next project. For the 59 bucks a hard drive costs these days I’d back it up and keep it safe…that 59 bucks could turn into a $3000 post only job with the existing elements you have.
I’d play very nice with them. Let the dysfunctional managers know you are keeping their material safe and if and when they need to communicate an idea with the elements you will exceed their expectations with a great video.
Why do people in our industry not know the answer to these questions? It is communication and it is exceeding the client’s expectations. Those two things equal success, so do them both well and you’ll be fine.

Also, Dual Layer BluRay discs are as low as about $6.00 US and 25 gig much less. I am now considering archiving the self contained final movie (ProRes 422) and the FCP, AE and Photoshop files in addition to our standard Hard drive backup. Also having a pile of small SD cards laying around or in a binder of sorts in small 32 gig chunks doesn’t make as much sense to me as a hard drive that can hold 1 terabyte for about the same amount…
So a hard drive backup for the bulk of the media to open the project in the next couple years or so, and a BluRay in case the drive (and its mirrored backup hard drive) as a last ditch effort to get the project back.
Lots of backups, lots of data floating around….wish I had a shelf full of tape…
