  • Website Template for Video Portfolio?

Posted by Kiera Faye on January 22, 2011 at 7:21 pm

I’m starting my own production business, and in need of a website to showcase my work, provide information, etc. I’d love to hire a quality designer to build a custom site, but I’d rather get something up and running quickly, so that I can have a web presence without having to wait for the time and money needed to build the custom stuff.

So, I’m looking for a decent template service. I work with photographers, and I know of many good services aimed at photographers that are almost what I’m looking for , but most have 2 fatal flaws: they don’t support video (well), and/or they’re Flash-based. I would really like to have something mobile-friendly.

Anybody know of a website template service that is NOT based on Flash and still handles HD video beautifully?

    TIA!

We’ve been searching for a decent template as well. This is a Mac product I found that is very intuitive and looks good. We are trying to manipulate the code to fit a layout over the top of our existing site.

Free download trial software too so you can try it first.

Put your demo on youtube now.
    Buy a domain w/hosting.
Hire a web designer to create your site.
Put you video on your site.

Thanks – that’s an interesting service! It looks pretty sharp, but I was thinking of more of a full website template. Something like ShowIt, which is actually a great service (aimed at photogs but does beautiful video) but operates on Flash. Maybe that’s the best I can get.

Please read the part where I say that I’d love to hire a designer, but need a faster, cheaper solution “for now.” I’m not just looking for how to get a video online – I’m well aware of that (and better ways than YouTube) – I’m looking for a template/website building service. Thank you.

Because what you sell is creativity, the last thing you need is the handicap of a template. My site could not be simpler. It’s just an image with 3 links. Nothing more. Nothing more needed. It’s no template though. If you need help with some simple html, I can help you out. I just started copying code from sites I dug until I understood what I was doing. I don’t sell web design but I do know a template when I see. So will your perspectice clientel. They’ll bail if they see you can’t think outside the box.

Do you want it to be SEO?
Are you sure you want it to be Flash? What about iPad/iPhone users?
    What about html.5?

I don’t know of any services for videographers like the ones that exist for still photographers, but you might consider using WordPress to run your site. WordPress was originally built as a blogging system, but it’s expanded to be a much more generalized content management system, and there are a lot of well-designed templates available (to use as-is, or to customize).

That is difficult to find. To have a simple customizable site that is low cost, no flash, no programming knowledge required site….may be asking too much. We have been in the need of something similar, we needed a temporary site to go up in a hurry while we figure out plans for something more (hopefully) substantial. We went with Wix.com.

Wix.com IS Flash based, but I think you are going to have to give on something. It is simple to learn and you can embed youtube video OR upload your own flv or mp4 videos. You can even optimize it for SEO. If nothing else it is a great way to have some thing decent looking and customizable that we can do ourselves w/o hiring a programmer while we figure something else out. Good luck!

Thanks to everyone for your input. I found a WordPress theme (from Themeforest) that I think will work great – very customizable, lots of widgets, support for Vimeo embeds, etc. I’m excited to get it up and running!

It does make me a bit sad that nobody has created a website service for filmmakers that offers the same sort of features that many photographer services have. Maybe it’s just because for so long, film and video have been expensive and thus dominated by larger companies rather than individual artists?

Press75 has several templates that work well with video. Might want to check it out and see if it fits your needs. https://www.press75.com
