I love it….this is a great solution for your particular situation. I agree it works best with progressive material, like 1080 30p. If you are careful how you set up your sequences and interpret the footage, you can get very realistic downscales to provide many “new” angles.

We actually find we can blow up 1080 footage in 1080 sequences by about 130% before it starts getting soft, so making “new” framing is easy.

In this case I export directly out of FCP. Somehow Compressor loves to mash up the downscale….even Episode has its faults downcompressing 1080 Upper Field material to SD.

Export out of FCP using Quicktime Conversion. Choose ProRes 422 and make it Interlaced LOWER field, which is the proper SD field order. Keep the frame rate a 29.97. In the Size box you have a choice to make the downscale either create a 4:3 720 x 480 or a 16×9 aspect for the DVD. Make sure you determine what your DVD will need.

Audio to 48k PCM.

Once you have this new SD proRes QT movie drag that into Compressor and use your standard MPEG settings that you normally use when starting with SD sources. You will find that the resulting MPEG 2 is much better than taking the full size 1080 movie thru compressor.

Try it and report back….

I would export directly out of the FCP timeline and choose ProRes HQ and be sure to check the interlaced box and set it to Upper Field. Then specify the framerate as 29.97.

In the Size checkbox, make it 1920 x 1080. Set Audio to 48k PCM and you should get a perfectly passable clip….a large one, but should pass QC.

Give Flash Spot a look. I have started working with them and they are sort of a great middle option. YOu send one file and they send either DG or direct to station FTP and will deliver HD to stations that accept HD.

I was tired of creating 8 versions of the same spot…Flashspot is an option.

Make them AVI with PhotoJPEG codec. As long as they have QT installed on the PC they can be read and will look great. Go with 75% quality and you have a perfect 422 AVI clip.

Mark stole my thunder….Watch it without sound and listen without picture. I have also heard of watching the program upside down to give a better sense of rhythm and making it harder to for shadow your own edits.

In our midwestern town about 80 percent of the companies are named after the owner…never was much for it. I went with Tilt Media because it sounded good off the tongue, didn’t pigeon hole us into one thing and a few other reasons. I also liked the “circle T” for the logo. One more major reason…..https://www.tiltmedia.com was available.

We are naming our studio with a different name so first I made sure we could buy the domain before we settled on a name. Can’t reveal what we came up with but it does not have my name.
