Just for the heck of it I went back and gave the Avid training videos on the ProMax site that David recommended another shot.

Four minutes in they were still asking me to tell all my friends so they could keep making more of these. What is this, a pyramid scheme or training?

So far I haven’t watched a second of training in almost 7 minutes of viewing.

I say…redo. Or use the trim tool you were supposedly going to show me and trim the first 5 minutes of the videos.

Have no idea. Never got that far.

Plus, the navigation within the movie file was abysmal. And correct me if I’m wrong but there is no indication of how long the segment is while you are watching them. You just watch the blue bar grow and try to calculate how long it would take to get across to the other side.

You wanted feedback…this is all I’ve got.

Personally what I truly appreciate is when I click on a tutorial and it says “Trimming and Editing Techniques” that the first line of the video is “Ok, here is the trim tool.”

Instead I watched about 3 minutes of a freeze frame while I got an entire dissertation on the background, staff, upcoming events, sponsors, purpose of the site, nature of the link I clicked on, how in-depth it would be, and a brief history of Avid.

Ok not quite that bad, but these kinds of videos have to stop with the boated intros…it’s a student demo reel mistake.

I friggin know why I’m there. Get to it or I’m gone.

Yup…that one was a stinker. I think I took in about all of 25 seconds of it.

Hey all this LTO talk sounds really easy.

OMG…not sure LTO is quite ready for 2012…this is way to complicated to make major strides into our industry.

Someone needs to really come up with a truly cross platform, easy to manage, high capacity solution.

Yikes. Barely got thru this thread.

So how are tickets to these vendor parties acquired? I got a great deal on rooms at the Rio because MCAI is holding their Media Festival award show there and rooms were $89 a night with their group rate. Plus I got a free floor pass in the deal.

I’ve only attended one party…I did like the Morning general sessions and Bob Ueker is at the Radio session so that might be a must see….being from Wisconsin and all.

    Any more?

February 16, 2012 at 3:41 am in reply to: Camera gear as a tax write-off?

$10k seems pretty high for a starter DSLR kit. And for the agency work that workflow might not be the best entry level solution. A simpler all in one camera package would allow for quicker setup and possibly better audio workflow(DSLR’s require an outboard audio recorder that requires syncing).

A T2i or even a 7D with a camera mounted LED, a shotgun mic that goes right into the camera and a decent tripod is about $3500. A couple FloLight LED panels and you are right around half of what you budgeted for.

$10k seems like a lot for an “experiment” regardless of what the write off might be.

I’m seeing a bit more of that, but hoping an uptick in the economic outlook will speed things up a bit. It’s getting especially important as we do more production with larger crews and they need to get paid too!

February 12, 2012 at 3:43 am in reply to: Dealing with picky bid specs

I participated in a pre bid survey to determine how much the project would even cost. So we chatted about the project, how it might be streamlined etc. Turns out that even though the specs of the project were pretty specific they were willing to look at other ways to accomplish the same thing. For example we might use students’ testimonials as audio only and cut broll over them. that way we could run around with a zoom getting bites while the other crew shot the broll.

In the end we didn’t get the job.

I have seen wide variances in bid estimates…I suppose it’s not my job to determine how the low bidder can make money with their bid, but my guess is there is some streamlining involved.
