I have rates on our page too and I think it adds a layer of transparency to the client…we are up front, we don’t hide things and there will be no surprises. We have gotten great leads off our site just because of the way we come across….a great bunch of talented creatives who love what they do and produce great work.
I think I get what Jason does, looks like a good guy and isn’t afraid to post his rates. BTW, they are right in line with ours, although we are considering a little bump in our rates that are almost 8 years old now!

There are plenty of reasons to get all footage into a single consistent container, and it has been this way since HDV native editing and MPEG2 native editing.
I don’t think I would ever rely on mixing multiple formats, or more than two anyway, in a single project timeline.
Just think of the scenario Walter threw at the AVID to resolve all the various frame rates inside various containers and expect it would all come out just right. A lot to ask of any editor including AVID.

We had a shoot the other day and they realized that more of the cyc wall needed to be painted white. Four guys with rollers and trays got to painting and when the first coat was done (it needed a second) we all were sort of standing there looking at it.
Couldn’t resist so I said, “well look at us…just standing around actually watching paint dry.”

Skype has a screen share and it doesn’t work great for a full session but works for review going thru the video looking over shots. We just used the telephone as our audio comm and the screen was via skype.
Worked ok….only have done it twice.

We will do half day rate for travel days only if it is truly a half day. Getting on the plane at 6:00am then getting to the hotel only to go out and scout for the rest of the day (a full 10 hours) is not a hlaf day rate.
And if you travel out on the last day in the morning and get back mid/early afternoon and only travel that is also a half day…but if you go and shoot some morning broll on that last day and travel in the afternoon getting home after dinner (another 10 hours) that is a full day.
Double check what’s happening on the travel days and what time you actually travel.

On page 6 of the report it shows that the Cloud (whatever that means in Avid world) is the #1 priority of CIO’s.
I dunno….AVID is a hardware/software developer…what does the cloud have to do with it?

I have Pre-Produciont Planning for Video, Film and Multimedia authored by Steve Cartwright….invaluable.
The one I have came with a floppy disc with documents on it….not sure that is useful anymore! Maybe a new edition has a CD or links.

Since we are a Canon 5D shop I keenly focused (so to speak) on the Canon 300 and the Blackmagic cameras. We have compared footage from the AF 100 and our 5D wins (at least our setup).
Good lenses are key and having EF lenses, the Canon and BM are likely here.
Locally, (Madison WI) lots of 5D’s 60D’s and Lumix. A couple Reds, one at a prominent production house, but not huge here. And plenty of P2 cameras around.
What a time we are in…with all the affordable cameras and Apple putting a sub-$300 price tag on editing software…our decisions will certainly affect our bottom line in some way.

We are a production facility with 5 FCP systems and 9 years of FCP projects backed up. We constantly open old projects, update them and output. It’s easy. I suppose I will need a working Snow Leopard install with FCP7 and AE 5.5 so I can continue to provide the excellent service we have.
Whatever the edit system we transition to it will mean months and months of growing pains…learning software, teaching each other, learning together and creating new workflows that become the new standard of service that we provide.
The harsh reality is that this is truly a sad time for me in this industry. It seems the wonderful run we had with FCP7, its ease of use and long years of dependable service is akin to taking the old Chevy to the crusher.
Premier Pro? Really? I have to be a Premier shop? Just doesn’t sound sexy. AVID? Are they gonna make it thru their financial burdens? Smoke? Ok. under $4000 NOW for Smoke on a Mac but what’s the upgrade cost gonna be going forward? (5 systems) and what Mac will I run it on.
Until I know what exactly Mac is going to do with hardware, I’m sticking to my very much working 5 seats of FCP and CS 5.5 on Kona cards. and we’ll be doing just fine whatever shakes out.
