I can see the new MacPro being a server to other older MacPros via Thunderboldt. I have four systems that are used all day every day…add a PCI thunderbolt card to them and hook them to the new MacPro. Add a raid via thunderbolt to the new MacPro and serve it up like a SmallTree RAID etc.

Lots of configs here with this new thing they are calling Thunderbolt…leave it to Bob Z to make us all think outside the box for once! Or twice.

With current prices for PCI SSD storage and that fast RAM, plus a brand new processor…it’s gonna be expensive. Not many have brought up the fact that it will be assembled by high-priced American workers. The case is pretty simple and probably affordable to mass produce.

For me it is more about what I have to buy in addition to the MacPro (because what I have won’t work). That’s the wild card. Lots of adapters, Thunderbolt expansion boxes, more outlets for all the wall rats I will have to plug in…and a big box of cable ties to wrap up all the cables.

But I can sell all my old stuff on ebay for pennies on the dollar, I suppose.

Why not just have two computers with a simple switcher. Switch to computer A and modify a graphic on computer B. Switch to computer B when needed…modify on computer A.

Very simple. Other than a second laptop this is very easy.

x264 is the answer. Great encodes with very small file sizes….it’s crazy how low you can drop the bitrate and still have great looking motion.

Paid extra for it for Episode 6.

That’s kind of what I thought. CatDV is storage agnostic. It is only cataloging the clips. I assume the folder structure is important. Any limits with folder names? I have a client that uses very long folder names as their convention. Any issues there?

Hmm….the Buffalo NAS I was thinking of was one like this with dual GigEthernet ports and both Esata and USB3 ports.

It would live here, has server networking built in and I would access it locally via esata. The client would hook into it over the internet.

My bandwidth is the biggest issue and the problem of redundancy as you pointed out. Something like this skew your perspective at all?

I have had a Buffalo Terastation for years and it has been a solid workhorse for having our own virtual cloud. Not as robust as true server software, but I am having CatDV do most of the heavy lifting..the NAS is just the Buffalo serving up the files.
