One little nugget Bob did offer was Neofinder. Been using it lately to catalog a pile of archive drives and it is a pretty darn solid and flexible program. Very impressed. And the writer of the code is an email away even if he’s in Germany or the Netherlands, but he’ll answer your request!

Bob’s not too far off on the direction this industry is taking and did make some sweeping assumptions, but I don’t think he was making those assumptions about the poser, per se but rather on things he’s heard or read over time.

What we’ve done is paid him as an employee…he’s probably still in the system, would now be considered part time so no benefits etc and we negotiate a fair staff hourly rate.

Do some simple math. Let’s say you can even produce one minute of video plus the associated stills for the social channels for $100. That is 60 seconds of finished and approved video, encoded to spec and delivered.
For 365 of those you would be charging $36,500. Which seems about right. But then that would also assume that you would be shooting on multiple days and that the finals would be of reasonable quality.
Let’s switch it around and say you were to charge him even $10,000 for the job to deliver the 365 videos plus stills etc. divide that by 365 and you now will be paid $27.39 per video.
No thanks. Plus I’ll bet if you told him you would charge $10,000 he would say you were nuts. But then you would tell him that you are only charging $27.39 per video plus stills delivered. Except you can’t make your Obamacare payments on that, so, no, $40,000 sounds about right!

Why is that clip 16 minutes long? (I digress…)
Bob, I just spent the weekend facilitating the judging of our local video competition. The young “bucks” (in Wisconsin this is appropriate this time of year) are up and coming for sure. And I agree about tech in general.
I took one of these young bucks behind my racks and showed them my Black Magic routing system, all the AJA PCI cards and breakout boxes, miles of SDI cable routed all thru the building, the converter boxes sending HDMI to monitors, the aggregated dual cable Ethernet gigabit network we set up, our hot swappable esata external hard drive back up and archiving system and the myriad of hard drives and backups of those that I have amassed.
I heard a sigh. So much to know about so many systems and workflows….there must be an app for that!
There is not (at least not today).
That said, I am so impressed with my 16 year old son’s aptitude for the new software and his understanding of pace and storytelling (from watching movies and great episodics like Mr. Robot). And my daughter’s understanding of being always available for any task on a set as a PA.
This has been an interesting year for me as well. I am turning 54 and I wonder what the next 15 years will bring and how it will resemble the past 15. I had my best year last year. This year has been my worst. Hmmmm….that’s interesting!
Everyone is innovating. But the kids in the industry have a lifetime of film making to use as a reference and to study. They study the classics, but they can also study why Die Hard (the original) was so well constructed, and why it’s my favorite Christmas movie! I saw it 17 times in the theaters. I was not even an editor yet.
Bob, kids are editing on iMovie at age 12 and even younger. They understand good interface design and great app usability. Some go on to become content creators and others become the next great software developer. How old is Zuckerberg anyway? He could be your son!
Listening to my panel of talented and qualified judges critique the diverse range of entries this year (and I watched them all with them) it was an eye opener. Adapt or die. But what shall I adapt to? What is the next phase of this long time career I have built? Of all 80 entries, maybe 3 were shot in a studio. So what do I do with my 6000 square feet of studio space (which was great for judging) when the model of how we tell a story has changed so drastically?
Bob, this is a day when sitting down and having a beer with the amazing Bob Zelin would be well deserved and worth every ounce of insight that you would bring to the state of the industry.
Legends still rule, right? Well, you’re one of them.

We also have the PCI SATA startup drives in our MacPros. We also have filled the four drive bays with a four-drive RAID array striped with SoftRaid, which we love.
Finally we aggregated our two ethernet ports on an aggregated HP switch so we have blazing fast Gigabit Ethernet networking between towers.
Oh, and we added USB 3 PCI cards and beefed up all our video cards so we have USB 3 to transfer camera cards etc and the video cards blaze thru encoding tasks in Adobe Media Encoder.
Been working great!
A Thunderbolt/USB3 PCI card option for these old workhorses would be ideal.

Bob, once again, makes great points. Although hard drives are mechanical they provide the fastest throughput and cost effectiveness.
While I understand the Raid 6 concept, how would that be different than just having multiple backup hard drives? We could simply copy to 2 or 4tb drives and clone them….keep one set on site and one off site. Wouldn’t that accomplish the same thing as a redundant raid setup? In that scenario I don’t need to create a large RAID, but could just copy to simple drives with their clones.
And that is exactly what we are doing now. It has worked great for the past 5 or 6 years…knock wood I’ve only lost one drive but had a backup.
Lots to think about. Wonder what LTO 8 will bring in terms of cost, capacity and speed.

THANKS all. We looked at the cloud but with probably hundreds of terabytes the upload time alone would be prohibitive. LTO is a possibility but access and initial setup/copying is also time consuming.
I’m sure I’m not the only one in this situation considering how long we all have been dealing with hard media and not tapes. I’m dubbing a Betacam tape to DVD right now from the late 1990s and it still looks great and plays great. Wonder if that was on an old SCSI hard drive if it would have spun up!
More research, but in the meantime anyone else?
