I did some test with custom capture presets in Final Cut pro on a Macbook Pro. I set up a DV source to H264, and after some trial and error, there is no doubt that encoding from a clip yields way better results. I also tried some MP4 settings. I am getting about 5 megs per 30 seconds or 10 megs a minute, but the video is pretty chunky, compared to a DV clip encoded with even QT player to H264 which I have better control, multi pass etc.
I think bot mac and PCs really lack a prosumer level appliance app that can take various sources and use standard codecs to encode for web.
So I got it to work, but the results were pretty marginal. Good enough for family videos maybe, but not for clients.

Others have had this issue…seems it is connected to perhaps printer settings in System Preferences. Delete existing printers, add in new ones that you need and it might fix the problem. did for me…it is posted loosely on the Adobe site.

You can also feed a video and audio signal into a Media Center PC, or any PC with a video card and Windows Media will encode from a live source. Works pretty good too. From a firewire camcorder you can even mark in and out and the encoder will do the preroll and everything. Its pretty much like doing a dub. It would be very cool if Microsoft would make an appliance that just took video inputs and encoded to WMV. Like one of those DVD recorders. They’d be onto something!

Wow, both CS and CS2 clean installs on OS 10.4.8 will not open a new doc. dAnyone else…this happens to be a Macbook Pro dual 2.16.
Ouch.
Any ideas on what file might be causing this?

Hey, don’t be so hard on the guy…maybe it is a trailer for local release only and a short run. Ever watch those cheesy local ads that run before a film….most of those were converted to film from Beta SP or worse, probably a few generations down.
Best bet would be to rip the MPEG to any uncompressed QT codec. Cut that together, color correct, and output to the best digital tape format you have….if necessary output a QT and get it to an AVID house who can output uncompressed AVID to digi beta.
Won’t be optimum, but guys, it’s not a lost cause if it is a low budget, video to film short run local or even regional run.
Certainly if higher quality footage exists besides the DVD get it.

My first suggestion would be to search these posts including archived posts and you will find countless stories and suggestions. It really is the best suggestion I can give, without rewriting what has been shared here.
and don’t forget the old saying….if you want to make a small fortune in video production…start with a large fortune.

Ok, the thing that might make it work is that I have Quicktime loaded on the PC and I have upgraded to QT Pro. Perhaps that is the key, but it sure works great.
Probably QT allows the reading of the PJPEG and the Windows encoder can read it because it is in an AVI wrapper.

Hey James…head on over to the compression forum or better yet the Windows Media and Hardware forum were I have posted a couple exhaustive expose’s on encoding with AVI’s from FCP to A PC using AVI…my secret? the new MPEG Streamclip version 1.7 (free) which does AVI’s with many more compressor settings that work fine in the PC.
