I agree….Adobe needs to figure out how to leverage the OS and hardware on Macs to at least come close to rivaling the performance with FCPX. The subscription model that includes a performance hit over FCPX is making me wonder about our upgrade path as well.

We don’t edit 6K red footage but the time is coming for larger files and more intensive processing needs….will Adobe keep up with the performance curve and justify the ongoing subscription price….or will the higher performance with a single price for perpetuity software win?

    Hmmmm…

Two thoughts. Right now so many talented people in our biz are opting to stay freelance. Apparently it’s too easy to start a new company. So they are not seeking staff positions. I used to receive 3-6 reels or requests for employment and now I am getting about one every 6 months. People who used to work for a local production company are now working from their home, many times with the same teams who were all at the production company. Production companies are now down to bare bones staff with freelance hires for jobs.

Also, are you certain this person is not going to seek work in the biz and become your competitor? Do you have a non-compete?

Our market has changed so much and tipped in favor of the freelancer as long as there is as much work out there as there seems to be right now. They usually offer lower rates than a production company so they immediately have the upper hand. They have the reputation because they can leverage their experience gained at the production company.

The production company can’t compete with the lowering of budgets and sometimes the freelancers have better and newer tools than production companies because of the lower overhead of a home office. It’s grueling and I’d love to chat a bit. Seems there is some similarity with us at least under the surface.

    Not an answer but…..

November 1, 2018 at 9:32 pm in reply to: Tiering” the levels of service

I just had a client who did just that….basically it goes like this:

There is a project and three different treatment approaches with examples are presented. The Gold is the most expensive approach….might require a studio, actors, more setup and crew.

The Silver might be a simpler interview setup, with maybe still a larger crew etc

Bronze would be a very simple one camera look and feel with little graphics etc.

Again the examples shown should reflect why one is more expensive than another.

Within these three categories my client even broke them into two different budgets depending on some of the crew and gear and locations they might use….so Gold had two levels, Silver had two etc.

Seemed to help sell it upstream as to why one is more than another and it ended up that the client liked the top Gold approach best. Of course the example was James Cameron interviewing Steven Spielberg!

July 25, 2018 at 8:39 pm in reply to: Bang & Olufsen headphones for video editing

This is all about fit since you will be wearing them a lot. Higher end Sony, Beyerdynamic, Shure, AKG and B&O (I have their turntable) would be fine….I even love my Grado’s! But fit is going to be everything. My kids don’t wear my Grados because they don’t like the fit, but I can wear them all day.

Do you have piercings that could hurt with certain headphones? the B&Os I have seen are narrower and don’t fit over the entire ear, where sony and Beyer full cup do.

I would recommend going to Best Buy Magnolia store and trying on a bunch…..you’ll find the perfect pair!

Then order them from B&H. (purposefully snarky remark…)

  • iMac Pro all the way. We have the 8 core with 64 gig RAM and the better video card. Get a very fast raid in the 500MB+ per second and you’ll be cutting with ease.

Except you’ll be using Adobe’s buggy software, which is another matter…

So what you’re saying is that by purchasing two iMac Pros and the QNAP NAS we didn’t make a huge miscalculation on the yet undeveloped Mac Pro that we are all longing for?

So far the iMac Pros are performing pretty flawlessly….now if only Adobe’s software would.
