Whew! 1800 kbps seems way high to me. I don’t know what frame size Vimeo streams, but knowing that is key. 360 x 180 seems small but 640 x 360 seems too large for a decent looking clip in a pretty fast download.

I almost always recommend changing the frame rate to 15 fps. This basically doubles your bitrate because you have half the frames to encode. Also, since it’s streaming, I almost always encode to mono. This way I can use a 64 kbps rate which is the 128 kbps stereo equivalent, again halving the datarate.

Now your images looks good and it sounds good AND it streams fast.

Win win.

We had studdery playback issues for a while along with sync issues. We ran the PCI Bridge app and changed our Kona slot to run at 4x instead of 2x. That solved it. We had everything in the correct slot, the correct RAM and fast hard drives.

One idea is to send the S-video signal out of the KONA to a DVD recorder along with the RCA audio. Put the Recorder on High Quality Record, usually 1 hour on a disc. Play out the sequence with downconvert and record to the reocrder. Finalize the disc and then rip the MPEG-2 and AC3 audio with MPEG streamclip. Bring these into your authoring app and you’re all set.

I have on several projects used the recorder as my poor man’s realtime encoder and MPEG Streamclip to retrieve the files.

Or, if you already output a DVCProHD master, redigitize to DVCPro50 with downconvert on the deck and encode that file. But we have finally had some success with compressor on one project, but it took a while to get the settings right. Should NOT have been that hard.

Also in the Clip settings the anamorphic box should NOT be checked.

Seems to me that this clip is a widescreen SD movie file. If you bring this clip into your standard MPEG2 compressor, or just bring it into your authoring app it should recognize it as a widescreen clip. You would specify that you want the track to be widescreen and it should look and play like a widescreen clip.

If you have a decent MPEG2 encoder on the PC, then you can indeed encode a Program stream MPEG-2 with audio at a high bitrate (around 15mbps constant bit) and see if the station will take that. Actually this is becoming an almost standard delivery format.

Here’s a great AVI tip. If you have Quicktime on the PC, and the other person has Quicktime on their PC, download MPEG Streamclip for free on the Squared5.com website. Open the AVI and save as AVI but choose PhotoJPEG at 75% quality for the output. This AVI file looks just like any other AVI file, and ONLY if Quicktime is installed, BUT it is 1/5 the size.

Best trick I can think of. Even Windows Media Encoder will recognize the AVI as a regular AVI, even though the PhotoJPEG codec is a Quicktime codec.

We saw the same sync issue with ANY ProRes codec. Redigitizing in DVCProHD solved the issue most of the time.

Seems intermittent on our system.
