Is 960x&720 always anamorphic?
Posted by Jason Adams on July 22, 2008 at 10:18 pmI am trying to use 960×720 as a square pixel mastering format for PAL. If I kick the shots out of compressor, after effects, nuke, etc with a specific aspect ratio of square pixels final cut always brings them in with an anamorphic aspect ratio. Even if I open them in Quicktime player they are displayed anamorphically.
This almost seems like a Quicktime issue, but I guess my question is: Is there a switch to tell final cut or quicktime to not always interpret 960×720 as anamorphic footage?

July 22, 2008 at 10:32 pmrendering to dvcproHD? it would assume anamorphic in that case. Animation codec, etc, should be ok

July 22, 2008 at 10:33 pm960×720 is the native resolution of DVCPRO HD, which uses non-square pixels with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.5 I believe. I’m just assuming that this is why you’re working with this particular resolution, unless there’s a different circumstance. But if it is indeed DVCPRO HD, it is not a square pixel format. You could transcode it to ProRes422 at 1280×720 if you want it to be in a square pixel format, though I think keeping it native in DVCPRO HD would probably be your best best.

960×720 is an anamorphic format associated with DVCPro HD. It is not a native frame size for anything else. FCP automatically stretches the footage out to full raster 1280×720 during play out.

July 22, 2008 at 11:12 pmSorry didn’t specify that I am trying to use it for a 4:3 proRes project. So I want it to keep its 960×720 4:3 aspect ratio.

July 23, 2008 at 12:12 amWhen you import your 960×720 clips to FC, just make sure that in the Browser it shows up as Square pixels. Should be display properly as 4×3.

Using that resolution at that aspect ration in that codec is, shall we say, not a standard way of doing things. What exactly are you trying to do? I suspect there’s a much easier way to do it.

July 23, 2008 at 10:41 pmI am working on an animated series, 52 episodes, all offline. Online will be done at another facility. The deliverable is progressive frame 25fps square pixel 768×576. But as a master the producers liked the idea of a over rezzed delivery in case there was ever a need to cheat uprez to HD. The shots are being compiled from tiff sequences. I want to use proRes because it is fast and easy to work with. I experimented with a lot of different types of sequence setups but the 960×720(used as square pixels not anamorphic) was the only one I could find that worked natively in progressive and square pixels and still utilized all of the FCP realtime functionality. Any other setup and we lost the realtime(even at lower resolutions). It actually works great and proRes is the greatest thing since sliced bread, except if any of the comp guys or producers want to check a shot in quicktime player it displays as 16×9 squashed. We also just started to use Final Cut Server and all the proxys and thumbnails display as 16×9 squashed. Every quicktime compliant application we have opens these files 16×9 squashed even if we try to overide aspect ratio in the original files. Somewhere there must be a switch that tells quicktime to ALWAYS display this resolution as 16×9. Since I dont work with live action or have any intention of ever using this resolution in its anamorphic state. I would like to know where I can find this switch and turn it off.
