Before I spend the time that I do not have following John’s suggestions, I believe that my best bet is to follow Steve’s advice first. BTW, I still just work in SD and agree that a new PC is necessary for HD (which still is in the future). So Steve, pardon my ignorance, but what steps do I take to uninstall the Vegas Plug-Ins? I already went to the Microsoft web site and downloaded the latest version of DirectX, so do I have to do this again after I uninstall the Plug-Ins? Do I have to uninstall Vegas Pro 11 before I do the above steps, or can I just leave it? Finally, how do I get all of my Plug-Ins back, for if Vegas Pro 11 still will not work I currently have Vegas Pro 10e installed, and it is working!! How will I even know what I removed?? Please advise, and thanks again in advance.

I just wanted everybody to know that his problem as been resolved! A Vegas reset (CTRL-SHIFT) did the trick! I got my text editing back!! Although I lost my screen layouts, I was able to recapture them on the drop down menu. The only preference that I lost was for the TEMP files, which I summarily correct. All now appears to be well.

I have been copying/pasting my ProTitler titles (with all attributes, including a gaussian blur and the titles sliding off the screen) without incident, at least on a project that has spanned 8 DVDs and over 50 of the same style titling! I originally went into ProTitler and typed in my first title, chose all of the attributes/effects etc. (including fade-in and fade-out) and stretched it to my desired length. When I wanted to use everything BUT the exact wording, I went to the (first) event instance, copied it, and clicked on in the timeline where I wanted to paste it and pasted it!! I then clicked into and edited the words, got out of it and it worked EVERY TIME!! The titles overlayed a bluish stock graphic that is one of the media files included in Vegas 8. So unless I am reading this totally wrong, I do not understand why you are having any issues.

I own a JVC SR-VS20U that will output via firewire from a VHS/SVHS videocassette. It is a dual-well dubbing machine that was built to transfer VHS/SVHS to mini-DV and vice versa directly, thus bypassing cabling and offering a better transfer. If I set it up to dub from mini-DV to the VHS side and just play back a VHS/SVHS tape, it sends out the signal via firewire as well as via the analog outputs. Now the buttons may need a little massaging to get this signal output function to work via Firewire, but with a little fooling around, if it does not immediatley work it eventually will !!

OK, my friends, here are answers to YOUR questions:
Don, for a 1 hour, 58 minute video (with only 3 minutes of audio, even though I encoded a complete AC-3 audio track) for an SS/SL DVD with no menus at 1% safety margin, the bitrate calculator shows Minimum 2984, Avg 4984, Max 8720. I actually used 3088, 4900 and 8500. While high on the low end (which it will never get this low), I was a bit conservative on the middle and high figures.
George, my bad! I meant so say 1 GB! Actually the AC-3 audio file compressed to 166.3 megs, FYI. I am curious, though, if I need to use 2-pass VBR to get closer to the AVG bitrate calculated, for I have seen my similar encodes actually are at around the Max bitrate, which could cause these excess file sizes, no?
Mike, please DO let us know what you find out with your three tests at different safety margins.
Perhaps we can come up with the best combination of bitrates (also taking into account safety margins) to use, but don’t you all agree that the bitrate calculator appears to be way off if my file sizes so exceeded 4.7GB? Perhaps I just should stick to 6Mbs CBR for these film transfers and 2-Pass VBR for videos that I have shot (if the latter will compress at more accurate rates based upon the bitrate calculator)?
Any more suggestions would be helpful based upon YOUR actual experiences (since I still am relatively new at calculating bitrates for DVDs and rendering as such), and I await Mike’s results with th hope that he stumbles upon something, too!

1) DVDA would not let me proceed any further unless the file that was chosen either was smaller or I allowed DVDA to re-render it.
2) Coincidentally (e.g., on purpose)I DID check in Explorer and the file WAS 4.82G!
3) I also DID account for the AC-3 audio. Since this was a Super 8 film-to-tape transfer, 99% of the audio track was bare, save for about 3 minutes in the middle of the capture that did include sound from the mag stripe. Other than that, NADA audio! In the bitrate calculator, though, I accounted for the full 1 hr:58 min of AC-3 audio. As you know, the audio is less than one MB for something like this, so the bulk of the problem lies within the video compression.

I tried Mercalli again, this time using (one at a time) different presets and turning on/off the various switches. In addition to continually seeing an extremely soft focus outcome (compared to the original footage), I also experienced a rectangular pixelized area in the top middle of the screen (when in the zoom-in, no border selection). I really would like this software to work, but I just cannot make it acceptable! This video segment on which I am working was shot on a hike in the woods (I have a mini-DV camcorder handheld as I am walking, following the movement of my walk and the people ahead of me). What am I doing wrong? I see the demos on the ProDad web site, as well as a demo via the Event DV web site, and Mercalli seems to work a lot better on those sites that I can make it work. Any further suggestions, hints?

Well, I tried them both WITHOUT SUCCESS! Both caused excess shakiness to the video and took the video out of focus enough that when compared to my original it looks out of focus. Edges of objects also had movement. I relly could not tell a difference between the final output of these two prodcuts except to say that Mercalli was a heck of a lot FASTER!! Here is what I wrote back to ProDad after I uninstalled the Mercalli Demo:
“Despite the green (and no red) during analysis, the RENDERED file is very soft-focused and the video is jerky. This was for walking motion compensation. I tried several adjustments, but to no avail. My original video is sharp as a tack, and the motion on my origianl video is much less obvious than using Mercalli to remove motion BUT Mercalli introduced soft focus, jittering around object edges and a jerkiness to the video!! Also, while I understand the red x over the video in demo mode, I also experienced either border pixellation or a small rectangle pixelation in the middle of the video, even after rendering. I did not know if this was due to the demo limitations or if the full version would also have this anomaly.”
