Since I am not familiar with the advantages of 32-bit floating point arithmetic and the view transform options, would you kindly explain the preferred usage and advantages/disadvantages of 32-bit vs. 8-bit processing? Also, when would one use view transform, and which option should be chosen? Too many options sometimes… Thank you in advance.

I took your advice, researched it a bit, and found what I thought was a great PC at Micro Center (Power Spec 213)–boy, was I WRONG! What a piece of crap–the first one turned on and off by itself every 7 seconds or so, and the second one lasted a day and a half before it exhibited this behavior!! Needless to say, I again am looking for a PC that will edit HD, so I now am asking you and anyone else who reads this to recommend a place to buy one. Where did you get yours, Ralph, or are you still looking, too? I would like to either purchase one preassembled or get all of the parts to build it myself from one place (to avoid the prospect of a part failing and each company blaming the parts purchased from another company as the culprit). Please advise, one and all, and thank you in advance.

Mike: Using Mark’s DVD Bitrate Calculator for a 2:06 (Hr:Min) video, I did 2-pass VBR and set the min to 2608, avg to 4352 and max to 7624. GSpot states that the Sys Bitrate is 10080 kb/s VBR and and Intervideo WinDVD software reports that the video bitrate is 7.728 Mbps.
John: This makes perfect sense and corroborates what I was thinking all along. None of my colleagues who use this method ever warned me about this resolution/detail hit (it appears that they either never noticed it or it did not bother them), as I was offering SD widescreen for the first time as an option to a Client thinking that if they did not want HD then at least I could provide them with a widescreen SD DVD that would fill their screen instead of them having to view the video with pillarboxing. The best idea, then, is that if a video is to be produced in widescreen SD that it be shot and edited in native 16X9 HD (1080i) and rendered to an SD-compliant MPEG-2 file ready for authoring–correct?

PROBLEM SOLVED!! Thank you, Steve, for persisting that the Mercalli Video FX box was hidden. On a hunch, I searched the forum and found someone who had the EXACT problem back in November 2009–Mike Holmes, who received a reply from JETDV’s Edward Troxel (whose Excalibur add-in I highly recommend). Edward suggested changing the screen resolution, and voila, the Mercalli Video FX box magically appeared! I recentered it on the screen, went back to my 1920X1080 resolution and got back to what I do best with Sony Vegas Pro 11–EDIT!! As always, you are my go-to guys, not having failed me yet whenever I run into a bind. Thanks again to all!!

When I dragged the B&W Video FX filter into the clip, the icon in the clip turned green but there was no pop-up window (e.g., I could not make any adjustments), even though the clip did become monochrome. However, if I dragged a transition into the clip, I DID get a pop-up box and I could make adjustments to the transition. It now appears that there is a problem with my Video FX filters across the board. Any ideas, for Mercalli MAY not be the culprit?

No way, no how! I moved every floating box, started the program with all of the defaults, uninstalled and reinstalled Mercalli V2.1 (both plug-in and standalone–SAL), and while the plug-in STILL does not work, the SAL seems to work just fine. The plug-in worked fine in Vegas 10. If I cannot get it to work in Vegas 11, has anyone used the New Blue stabilizer that just came out, LOL? Short of any drastic steps, am I just out of luck with Mercalli 2 working in Vegas Pro 11??

I was so frustrated that I did not even think of trying other filters–good suggestion Steve (although it will have to wait until later today). In any event, what is the best method to make sure that I uncover EVERY hidden window to see if the Mercalli filter is fired up and ready to process?

Kudos to you Vegas Pro geniuses!! Steve, I followed your advice, deleting all of the plug-ins, and after a couple of hours sans the plug-ins (saved to a new Sony folder that I made) via Revouninstaller, Vegas Pro 11 FINALLY ran! The real test now is to see how stable it is with my PC in actual use! I now can re-install the plug-ins on an as-needed basis. Stephen, I took your advice and ordered the GeForce GTS 450 video card from NewEgg. Will this card now allow me to run the New Blue Titler, as when I currently open it I am greeted with “Titler can’t work due to low GPU capabilities”? And JR, in a few years I again will be able to afford a new PC with a 64-bit OS when my Clients start asking for HD (which they currently do not, but I expect they will be in the near future).

Everything checks out. The system files check box closed down after running, and my system has DirectX 11 properly installed. Thanks for the one-up on the video card–can’t hurt at that price, although this is a PCI 2 X16 card and I only have a PCI X 16 slot. Any other suggestions on getting Vegas Pro 11 up and running? Thanks!
