  • Shopping for New PC

With my son’s wedding coming up at the end of September, the need to edit his HD video (of course I will NOT be shooting it) is near the top of my list, and I already have proven to myself that my current PC is not powerful enough to handle HD. I need to purchase a new PC, then, without a lot of time to shop for it, so I am asking the experts here (who never have let me down or given me bad advice about anything). My search has started with MicroCenter (they are local) and their G213 PC, which offers the following:

    Intel® Core i7-3820
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
    16GB DDR3-1333 RAM
    2TB 7,200RPM Hard Drive
    120GB Solid State Drive
    12X Blu-Ray DVD Burner Drive
    8-in-1 Digital Card Reader
    (2) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti
    (2) 10/100/1000 Network
    802.11b/g/n Wireless
    Bluetooth

It offers a full complement of ports (including 8–USB 2; 2–USB 3 and1–Firewire 400) and gets good reviews. The only downside from reviewers is that it only has a 500W power supply instead of a heftier 700W one, and that 2–GTX560 cards should have been installed instead of the 550s.

So is this a good buy (at $1,499 without display)? Or are the basic specs just good and I should shop elsewhere for a few heftier parts and a better price? Since I am not fully up on what is needed in a PC to achieve seamless HD editing (or at least close to it), I would appreciate any guidance or actual PCs to shop for. I trust your collective knowledge, and being under the gun I know that you will steer me in the right direction if not to the PC of choice itself (which would be the best answer of all!). Thanks in advance, and I will continue my search just as soon as I get a better grasp on what to look for.

    Hi Rich,

Here’s some information for you that I have been following and will probably build one from the specs provided from VideoGuys. Click on link or go to videoguys.com.

I took your advice, researched it a bit, and found what I thought was a great PC at Micro Center (Power Spec 213)–boy, was I WRONG! What a piece of crap–the first one turned on and off by itself every 7 seconds or so, and the second one lasted a day and a half before it exhibited this behavior!! Needless to say, I again am looking for a PC that will edit HD, so I now am asking you and anyone else who reads this to recommend a place to buy one. Where did you get yours, Ralph, or are you still looking, too? I would like to either purchase one preassembled or get all of the parts to build it myself from one place (to avoid the prospect of a part failing and each company blaming the parts purchased from another company as the culprit). Please advise, one and all, and thank you in advance.

I just ordered a new custom PC here’s the spec :

    1 x Intel 520 Series 180GB 2.5″ SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive – Retail £179.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard with FREE BOOGIE BUG XXL GAMING MOUSE MAT £129.98
    1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-Bit – OEM (FQC-04649) £119.99
    1 x MSI HD 6870 OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £113.99
1 x Corsair HX 750W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-750HXUK) £99.98
    1 x Corsair XMS3 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX16GX3M2A1600C11) £95.99
    1 x Antec Kúhler H2O 920 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366/AM2/AM2+/AM2+/AM3+) £84.98

    1 x OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) – OEM £12.98
    1 x Nero 10 Multimedia Suite Essentials – Suite 2 – OEM £1.99

After reading on here I went for the reference AMD card listed on the Vegas site pages.

Its not the latest or greatest but Im running 3 monitors off it (all 1920×1080) and it just rendered out a 1080p MP4 file with about 6 layers in LESS than real time.

6 minute MP4 that would have taken maybe 30-50 mins on my old PC (Q6600 @ 3.5GHz) took 5 minutes with Sony AVC rendering GPU assisted.

    That is something else!

…and if I only worked in Pounds instead of Dollars maybe I would be able to figure out if I could afford this, PLUS I will need to buy it from a US supplier. Are you or anyone else able to guide me in this direction? Thanks!
