virtualdub deshaker vs. mercalli
Posted by Rich Kutnick on January 24, 2008 at 4:45 pmHas anyone tried virtualdub deshaker vs. mercalli to attempt to determine which product is better at removing the shakes from camera footage. I hear that deshaker does a better job, but is much slower and more cumbersome to use than mercalli. The demos on the prodad site are quite impressive for mercalli (and should be for a product that sells for around $120, while deshaker is FREE). I have been looking for a filter to perform this function and would like any input from those familiar with them before I take the leap. Thanks in advance.

January 24, 2008 at 5:12 pmIMO, Mercalli does a much better job than DeShaker, the color is sampled better/more robust, and provides a more accurate image true to the original.
But as you say, it costs $$.Douglas Spotted Eagle

January 25, 2008 at 10:49 ami used Deshaker stand alone with Virtual Dub for a client with a lot of very shaky helicopter shots over mountain ranges with great results, it’s abit tricky but heres’ a useful tutorial…

January 26, 2008 at 5:53 pmWell, I tried them both WITHOUT SUCCESS! Both caused excess shakiness to the video and took the video out of focus enough that when compared to my original it looks out of focus. Edges of objects also had movement. I relly could not tell a difference between the final output of these two prodcuts except to say that Mercalli was a heck of a lot FASTER!! Here is what I wrote back to ProDad after I uninstalled the Mercalli Demo:
“Despite the green (and no red) during analysis, the RENDERED file is very soft-focused and the video is jerky. This was for walking motion compensation. I tried several adjustments, but to no avail. My original video is sharp as a tack, and the motion on my origianl video is much less obvious than using Mercalli to remove motion BUT Mercalli introduced soft focus, jittering around object edges and a jerkiness to the video!! Also, while I understand the red x over the video in demo mode, I also experienced either border pixellation or a small rectangle pixelation in the middle of the video, even after rendering. I did not know if this was due to the demo limitations or if the full version would also have this anomaly.”

January 29, 2008 at 8:13 amInfos from the FAQs …
How does Mercalli stabilise my videoclips?
How can I remove undesired shakes in Mercalli (more efficient)?https://www.prodad.de/faq/01/gb/faq-00000065-00000006.html
After applying Mercalli the video has been reduced extremely.
In addition the borders are very large and shown as blurred areas.
How can this be avoided?https://www.prodad.de/faq/01/gb/faq-00000069-00000006.html

January 29, 2008 at 12:59 pmI tried Mercalli again, this time using (one at a time) different presets and turning on/off the various switches. In addition to continually seeing an extremely soft focus outcome (compared to the original footage), I also experienced a rectangular pixelized area in the top middle of the screen (when in the zoom-in, no border selection). I really would like this software to work, but I just cannot make it acceptable! This video segment on which I am working was shot on a hike in the woods (I have a mini-DV camcorder handheld as I am walking, following the movement of my walk and the people ahead of me). What am I doing wrong? I see the demos on the ProDad web site, as well as a demo via the Event DV web site, and Mercalli seems to work a lot better on those sites that I can make it work. Any further suggestions, hints?

I am interested in Mercalli, and interested in other people feedback. I had a look on their website, and I found this which may help you for your blur problem (border):
https://www.prodad.de/faq/01/gb/faq-00000069-00000006.htmlHave you tried it ?
Otherwise, does anybody know if they are discount currently or not ??? I heard -25% from a friend, but he does not find the url…. :-((((OG

February 3, 2008 at 8:27 pmI own Adorage, Heroglyph amd Mercalli. I get the proDad newsletter and they do offer special discounts from time to time. The last one was 20% off and was sent in December. However, the links from the email do not work anymore.
With that said I recommend Mercalli as one of the best software plug-ins you can buy. I have had some footage where it doesn’t seem to work very well and other footage where it works fantastic. But I am still learning and there are quite a few settings to work with. It is like color correction. You have to work with it for a while to master it.
If you look at this video you will see Mercalli in action. I left the blurred edges so you can see the corrections it is making.
