yes, see as in use.
There will be 12 gig of your ram left unused which After efects cannot access.
Sorry to be he bearer of bad new’s, it’s without a doubt the most dissapointing problem with After effects, this may be a constraint of the actual OS though, I know XP 64 will only assign 4 gig per app 🙁 it’s extremly stupid and frustraiting.

After effects can only see 4 gig of ram even with a 64 bit OS.
EDD: you can limit the Preview window resolution to half (this helps) you should be able to see a little tab at the bottom of your preview window that says FULL, within this tab there are some more options to downsample the resolution. Setting the playback size of this window to %50 and the downsample to %50 will allow you to preview more of your comp.
I have to say I was very dissapointed by this ram limitation as I have 8 gig, so am in kind of the same boat.

May 14, 2009 at 10:56 pm in reply to: any ideas how to do this creating a linear line of videoNice Video, the music and the video look to be either created on (in part) or atleast inspired by the Monome midi controller, Primerily developed to control music software. I myself and a small handfull of other producers have started to use them to control live video apps such as Resolume Avenue, The monome and Resolume avenue both use layers or “rows” of clips in this way.
The way I would do this would be live, each row on the monome having it’s own video layer, The monome has 16 pads to a row, each pad triggers one of the loops, the 16 loops would then form the layer, this would be repeated using different footage for each row.
I know there are probably a few people out there that would aproach this in a different way, no problem there, what you have to bare in mind is that this is an AV composition, and would most likely have been created using tools designed specifically for simaltaineous Audio and Visual manipulation (Video sampling) and ( Live Video performance) as I have discribed above.
If you want to have a look further in to this side of AV work, it is something that is obviously of interest to you, trust me After Effects is not ideal for this kind of work, you need to be lookiinf at a programme like Resolume Avenue 3, and well, the tip about the monome is one of my little secrets, so keep it under your hat 🙂
Monomes come in many different sizes, from the small 40H up to the 256 pad version I use (16 rows of 16).

Resolume Avenue 3 has many effects similar to that used in your video. Have a look through them and chek out the software aswell.

Thanks paul, I’m watching through their tutorials, there are a lot of them too, cool!
I’m still not sure that there isn’t just a simple function I’ve missed. When your actually grabing a layer and rotating it 180 degres with the orbit tool, there is no orbiting “through”, the tool simply rotates the layer, this is how I’d expect the end render to look, I need to capture that motion, keeping the cameras distance in relation to the layer at a constant.
but this does not happen when the composition plays back, the camera travels in a straight line between the start and end point’s that are recorded as keyframes resulting in (as you said) an orbit “through” the layer. Is there a simple way around this? imo the orbit tool is not behaving as it’s name nore it’s it’s “hands on” controling, would indicate, it’s “hands on ” movements seems to me to be completly detatched from it’s final preview. Though I’m no expert.

Nah seem’s ok, Cleared out about 50 digi effect plugs that I know I’ll never use and a few AFX plugs that I didn’t like.
If you know your never going to need to use a “Light saber” “Colidascope” or a “Fog bank” etc etc it’s best that they’re out of your browser,I supose it depends what your using AFX for, my set up’s geared towards video sampling, not so much towards things like animation or advertiseing etc.
Thanks for your concearns though Dave.
Cheers mate 😉

I see your point’s, it’s just thats how Ive always worked with other software and I know for a fact it does speed up my work flow, I’m not just being obbsessive.
For my audio work, I have installed and used a good many plugins, hundreds infact over the years and have wittled them down to 20 or so that are actually usefull to me and displayed by my apps browser. Now I’m moving in to AV, I’m finding the same thing is happeneing with video effects, it’s cool though, I’ll just delete all the effects I dont use and store them on an external drive.
thanks again guys.

lol, OK I sussed that out pretty quickly, sorry about that, perhaps someone could tell me how to delet posts instead?

Same here also, the renders I make of video are all spot on, renders with alpha channels, compression, you name it, always top notch.
I mean I have a work around, it’s not the end of the world, just a hindrance.

EDD:, Also, I think I work with different material to you. I’m composing using film footage mostly ripped from dvd. I also don’t use a video editor like you. My pepping is done in AFX and my editing is done live in Resolume3.

Hey Dave. 🙂
Sure, before I go to of topic, my point is that if After effects says it can do something (Like render wav) then it should do it propperly, AFX’s wav renders wont even play in some basic media players, yet most free audio apps render better quality wav files than AFX.
I know we’ve been through this before and concluded that After Effects is not an audio app (No video app is). However I need to create very complex audio effects that can’t be created within a video app. Example of complex audio processing: https://eborelease.wordpress.com/2007/10/10/1999-knights-attack/ this kind of audio processing has to be handled by a dedicated audio app, that’s the bottom line.
I’m know I’m working differently to you, but it’s unusual stuff that not many people do, the way I work is I run my audio and my video in two separate apps, (AFX & FL Studio) they are synced together so that “ram preview” in AFX triggers audio playback from FL (Not from within AFX). It’s a very fast way of working on both audio and video simultaneously.
We are now seeing more and more apps that are incorporating complex Audio and Video functions both together in the same app, Resolume3 for instance, VJamm, Final cut pro too I think also. Some of these have even adopted live video creation and composition features, such as Res3.
Example of live video manipulation 🙂

It’s difficult to sync AFX to any other app, because it sends no time code, has no midi out/in (It’s not a live app). Still I’ve managed to find a way and it’s proving to be a very efficient way of working, though limited by the amount of Ram preview AFX can output and it’s messed up WAV renders..
There’s nothing wrong with splitting off audio and visuals in to different apps, it simply allows me access to much more complex audio tools, is all.
