Does the sync drift or is it consistently 1:30 off? Are the three cameras in sync with each other? Are you capturing 23.976? The only thing I can think of is, since the Varicams are recording 24p within a 30i stream, that process of removing the pulldown to 23.976 might account for that inconsistency. I’m not positive, but it’s a thought.

It doesn’t sound like you’re doing anything wrong, and of course they insist they did everything right on set. Just for a good laugh, don’t ask them if they used to the lock-it box on set, ask them if they used it right. That’s a party starter!

I should also mention. The project mixes frame rates a little bit, and while is primarily 15:1s, there is also some DNxHD footage. I’m thinking I’ll crash record the DVDs and rip that in order to compress the digital deliverable of the rough cut.

Is it standard workflow to always video mixdown before an export?

The resolution was set to full, and as soon as we set the resolution to half, it played back with no problem. Strange that it would struggle with three streams of 15:1s but it’s working.

You also can’t modify the metadata in an AMA clip. I recently brought in large groups of DVCPRO HD on P2 cards, and need to assign auxiliary timecode to sync them. I couldn’t do it until I transcoded them.

I’ll test if they play individually. Many group clips were causing this error. Resolution is 15:1s. I believe that resolution was set to half, but I’ll confirm that.

Turned out by using multigroup instead of group, and making sure I sorted first by auxiliary timecode, and second by tape name, it did exactly what I needed. Thanks for your suggestions!

If you’re shooting using free run time code, you’ll get timecode breaks, regardless, and that’s not always bad thing since FCP and Avid will break up the clips at timecode breaks. Granted, it becomes a pain in a multicam shoot, if camera A cuts, but camera B continues shooting all takes in series.

Striping time code is beneficial for tape edits, not so much for shooting.
