OMF vs MXF. Also best compression for FCP ?
Posted by Johnny Smith on August 27, 2010 at 12:02 amLab finished HD telecine (shot feature on 35mm) and is digitizing footage.
Do I want OMF files or MXF files?
What’s easier to import back into FCP for conforming? I got a tricked out Mac Pro with a 3 terabyte array.
Also any recommendations for the Video Compression ( DNX175, DNX115, DNX36, 14 to 1, etc ).Johnny Smith replied 15 years, 8 months ago 7 Members · 18 Replies -

Uhm…neither. You aren’t editing on an Avid. If you are, you are posting in the wrong forum. Those are Avid media types. You want Quicktime, namely ProRes.

If you ARE going to edit this on an Avid, then get DNxHD 175…and for finishing on FCP, look into https://www.automaticduck.com

August 27, 2010 at 12:14 amUsing FCP not Avid.
I was told ProRes as well. How sure are you that I need ProRes 422 HQ?
This is a world class lab they can provide that. -

August 27, 2010 at 12:19 amIf you’re working on FCP, Shane as well as I am 100% positive. Those are Avid media types. Final Cut will no accept them.

What frame size are you planning to edit and how are you finishing?

August 27, 2010 at 12:42 amYeah, are these going to be THE masters? Or will you come back and recapture at a higher red later?
I say HQ over ProRes 422 as your source is 35mm film.

August 27, 2010 at 12:44 amI believe 1080p 16×9, double checking this with the lab now.
Telecine was done onto HDcamSRs flash to flash. The picture is already edited in standard def. Will not be editing HD footage but conforming it and color correcting. Will be burning DVDs for festivals for now but ultimately will master on HDcamSR and will possibly make a print if the film takes off.
The film looks gorgeous on standard def cause it was shot on 35. Curious how much better it will look on HD. Will know tomorrow. -

August 27, 2010 at 12:50 amShane unless the film really takes off these will be the masters. I want as much quality as my Mac Pro can handle. My machine is a Mac Pro OS X 10.5.6 2×3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, Memory: 8GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM, 3 terabytes RAID, 2.73TB available. Still think HQ?

August 27, 2010 at 12:58 amYeah, if SR are your masters, and you want great quality…HQ.
Do you have a RAID array to play these back? FW800 won’t cut it. FYI.

August 27, 2010 at 1:15 amyes i have a 3TR Raid. Is that good enough?
Is HQ better that ProRes? Can someone else confirm this?
My Lacie external drive has something faster than FW800, forget what it’s called.
FYI the RAID is inside the Mac Pro.
You guys sure my Mac can handle HQ?
