  • Of course, I’ve got a friend over at Apple putting a system together for me, however all AVCHD cameras are marketed toward non professionals, such as what I use this camera for (The family cam).

I just wanted to do test to see if its was possible to do it “the hard way” so too speak. My conclusion is that while very difficult, not impossible, the results are pretty good.. But boy-howdy, its a lot of painfully work.

I personally will be going the BM intensity card route, but I feel for consumers on this one. I don’t think they know what they are in for..

  • You do realize that that card can only work in a very limited number of Macs.. All Laptops, mini macs, iMacs, G4, a number of G5s, and even a large number of winTell G5’s are out of the question..

    Just an FYI.

  • Those are sure a lot of assumptions.. I never said that I was in any profession..

This user group sure doesn’t need any pompous arrogant a-holes like yourself, do we.

Perhaps in the future you might consider just writing a post that says it looks great here, but I’m unable to post an example that accurately reflects what I’m seeing. Others, including me, might share in your enthusiasm, but that sample had the opposite effect.

Sorry, but the overwhelming good responces that I recieved, simply just makes you crappy comments void.. Get over yourself.

  • >>Wow, that looks almost as good as HDV on a bad day.

No, it’s actually better than HDV at true 1920×1080. HDV is only 1440×1080.. And half the camera size as near any HDV camera, plus no tapes, easier on the batteries, and cost 1/2 of what HDV cameras cost.. Yeah.. it looks great.

    >>Sorry Richard, but I just don’t get it, all that work and…

You don’t get that the HDV standard is only temporary until a new tapeless standard comes like AVCHD or P2??

    >>Hopefully FCP6 will give you a better solution.

Hopefull is nice, but people like me are “doing now”.

  • Because thats the only way to save it from AVCHD and get it into the Mac without a loss of quality.

If there’s a CODEC that both PC and MAc will share I’m all ears.

  • I guess you guys don’t know too much about AVCHD yet. There is nothing that edits AVCHD footage yet. Including http://www.squared5!

The fact that I got this into DVCPRO HD, is something that no one has been able to accomplish yet.

Now, that being said, My next Mac will have a BlackMagic Intensity Card and I eliminate all those steps, however this was a demonstation of something that is still not doable yet.

I knew it didn’t work with FCP. Not a big deal right now, because this is a personal camera, and all I do is film and throw the tapes into a drawer and come back later to edit a DVD together.

I know ths is the future. AVCHD is not just a sony idea.. I wanted to jump into it anyways, given the teribale state of the HD camcorder market at the moment. HDV is not a real HD.

Loose some quality? If I go anolog out, I loose massive quailty by going SD and Not HD. The footage on the camera is absolutly stunning! I would hate to loose it. 🙂

Worse case here.. I’m going to keep archiving my footage in the .mt2s format on regualar DVD’s, and I hope at some point utilties will exist on the market to work with this format, transcode it into something FCP can read, or perhaps Apple will make sure they stay true to their commitment to Sony. I’m assuming that the .mt2s file format is Blue-Ray right?

Another possiblity is to go buy me a BlackMagic HDMI card, and capture it via the HDMI output on the camera. Haven’t tryied that one yet.

    Thanks Everyone

VLC fails too.. No listing of support for AVCHD format on MPEG Streamclip yet either..

    Thanks
