Old-fashioned particles, I completely forget about them. They were brilliant in their own way…

You know, Jenna is now free. 3dattack.net, go to plugins. Try out two tube objects inside a Tweener object. You might also get some joy from Iterator on this.

The Maxon site has a tutorial for underwater scenes I believe. Also, a guy on CGTalk got some good results for a penguin render (search on ‘penguin’ and his thread will come up).

What you want is an After Effects function like ‘Sequence Layers.’ It’s a huge need, but right now there’s no easy answer.
If what you need are radio waves, the brute-force method will probably pay off best. Make a tube object and animate its radius or its scale. Once you have one animated properly, manually offset them in the timeline. It’s ugly, but it’s how it’s done 90% of the time.
There’s also a plugins for offsetting animation. Search c4dplugs.com for the word ‘timeline tools.’ This’ll help with deciding on your timing.
If it was me, I’d do it with Xpresso using the History and Iterator nodes. The setup is described at C4dcafe.com in various posts by a user named ‘base80.’ Search the forum for ‘iterator’ or ‘iterator node.’ Brian Jones in this forum also knows how to do it because he’s kind of an Xpresso freak of nature.

There is an article on psyop and the ‘making of,’ but it’s mainly about their use of XSI. But I bet if you email them, Peder, they’d tell you more.

Do you have QT installed?

Depends on which kind of shader you’ve used, what kinds of lights, what kind of render.
Ambient Occlusion, translucency and some kinds of procedurals shimmer (texture problem–up samples and up AA in render settings).
Soft and area shadows flicker (lighting problem–play with shadow panel in lights, up map size, play with bias).
Radiosity flickers and shimmers and shimmies and shakes and does the watusi (rendering problem). The answer is to use a good lighting rig rather than radiosity (the fast way), use the new AO shader in v9.5, along with separate passes for normals, ambient light and diffuse light, mix together in AE or Shake using compositing tricks that take too long to explain here (the very good compromise) up your stochastic samples until it goes away, if it ever does (the extreeemely sloooow way), or to learn to bake your textures (the slickest way).

You’re not on a mac, but the situation is surely the same:

Oops, my bad, he’s talking about bringing a number of things in sequentially, like ‘Sequence Layers’ in AE.
There’s no command to do that. There are plugins for tiled animation (Jenna, Ditools and others), there’s Xpresso to make it work with a lot of sweaty learning, there’s Offset Animation by Entagma:
