Shimmering texture??
Posted by Jon Herron on October 24, 2005 at 8:10 pmOff hand does anyone know what would cause a shimmering texture. I have textured some “gear” models with a metal like texture and they are shimmering on the insides.

October 25, 2005 at 3:45 amDepends on which kind of shader you’ve used, what kinds of lights, what kind of render.
Ambient Occlusion, translucency and some kinds of procedurals shimmer (texture problem–up samples and up AA in render settings).
Soft and area shadows flicker (lighting problem–play with shadow panel in lights, up map size, play with bias).
Radiosity flickers and shimmers and shimmies and shakes and does the watusi (rendering problem). The answer is to use a good lighting rig rather than radiosity (the fast way), use the new AO shader in v9.5, along with separate passes for normals, ambient light and diffuse light, mix together in AE or Shake using compositing tricks that take too long to explain here (the very good compromise) up your stochastic samples until it goes away, if it ever does (the extreeemely sloooow way), or to learn to bake your textures (the slickest way).

October 25, 2005 at 7:29 pmThanks Govinda, appreciate it. Im useing BhodiNUTDANEL, Cinema 8.5, no radiosity. I’ve lowered my threshold, turned 24 bit dithering on. But, have the Min Max the same (1×1, 2×2) It seemed to help a little. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but Im kinda a perfectionist. Baking textures sounds interesting….I’ll have to look into that!
thanks bro
