I happen to own both the HVR-z1U and two of the HDR FX1 cameras. THe workflow I’ve settled into is to shoot everything in 1080i and then downconvert to DV. You can do this because the camera has built in Downconversion capability. Editing HDV is a pain because of the long GOP format. Working in DV will be much smoother as long as your destination format is SD.

Well that is probably a job better done in an animation program. FCP wil probably be of little help. You can invert your artwork (shot or sequence) of the building and use some BORIS water ripples as a filter on the image but it really won’t be truly believable (if that is what you are looking for). There are a million parameters in those controls and it will take some time to get it right. You may also find that the ripples need to be executed in a different source plane than the reflected image. That is the reflected water must have a vanishing point but the image actually wouldn’t have that except as a function of the water itself. Ripples closer to the camera will need to appear closer than the ripples farther away. Additionally you may have to create a mask where the reflected image meets the shoreline. I know that AE can do some amazing things but for a photorealistic look you’ll probably want to use Maya, Lightwave or 3DS Max. However be prepared for a price tag of at least several hundred or even several thousand dollars per second of animation. I suspect that is why you came to the forum for help – because budget might be a problem. You might want to post this on the AFTER EFFECTS forum for some additional help there.

Well I thought we bought that some time ago but maybe I was dreaming. In any event what program do I purchase for this capability? They have several on their site:
    WMV Studio $49
    WMV Studio Pro HD $179
    WMV Studio Pro $99

Looks I might just need WMV Studio. Recommendations?

Thanks, Walter. I’m in Buford, GA just like you. Maybe we could get a beer sometime. (Although I rarely drink beer- perhaps that is the problem). I’m doing everything exactly as you suggest and I’m still getting this very odd anomaly. I’m confident that it will not exist in the final output file. So i’m not too worried about it right now but I do want to get it solved.

Thanks Guys. The problem is in the moving footage also. Last night I output the sequence through compressor to an MPEG 2 File to see if this was a monitoring problem or something actually that would wind up in the video. In the MPEG 2 everything looked fin so that gave me a bit of a comfort factor. In our production design no stills move. This is a DV timeline (did I mention that?). It is just completely annoying. I did have one open sequence and closing that made no difference. I’ve monkeyed with field dominence and with changing the sequence from interlaced to progressive and nothing helps.
