I’ve been wondering the same thing for my EX1. Are you guys using a specific brand of adapter? Or, know of the best one available today? Is the Hoodman good? Do you have any idea whether these would work in the Sony F3?

  • Thank you guys, for the input. Sounds like I need to get familiar with a scope or two. I was hoping, rather naively that, I would be able to set the camera for a wide dynamic range and shoot away in dimly lit interiors to bright sunny day exteriors (I, actually, DO know better) but, from what I’m reading here, each scenario might require it’s own different camera set up. Would that be accurate? Perhaps my own settings stored ‘in camera’ for different scenes? Should each scene be judged with a WF/V scope prior to shooting? Anybody got any picture profiles established for the F3 recording to a Ki Pro Mini that I could start with? Does anyone know of a document outlining the the different settings in the camera such as gamma, black gamma, phase, frequency, etc… what they do specifically and why you would want to change them? (Yes, John, I am paying attention to your comment on using the scopes to see what the settings do.) I would just love to read something explaining all the functions, ifs, ands, and whys. Sorry for all the questions but, inquiring minds want to know. And I realize some of them might be more appropriately directed to different forums. Thanks so much again!

June 3, 2011 at 5:45 pm in reply to: can you mark used footage as ‘used’?

Definitely a skill I hope to develop. And when you put it that way, “Drop it in…oop, that was used. Undo…try somewhere else.”, looking at it that way will certainly be helpful. I should have had Duplicate Frames turned on from the git-go. Still wish I could see some kind of indicator in the Clip Viewer for portions of the clip already on the TL but, guess you don’t always get what you want…

And Walter, as a junior editor (me), that “a tad time-consuming” line is an understatement.

    Thanks everybody.

Thanks Shane but, unless I’m missing something here, the Duplicate Frames feature, when I do it, only shows up on the main timeline, not in the Clip Viewer (should I refer to this as the ‘Clip Preview Window’?). If it can show color bars or some type of indicator in the Clip Viewer, please let me know how to do it.

Thanks Michael for the tip on duplicate frames. I did it and even though it’s still kind of confusing, this could be helpful.
Scott, that makes sense, too but, I’d have to break all my clips into sub clips to do this.
Jason, that’s a cool applet, that could be helpful, also.
    Thank you all.

Don’t mean to harp or complain unnecessarily (I don’t expect FCP to do my laundry) but, would a color indicator bar or color overlay in the timeline of the clip viewer for used footage be too much to ask?
I think I’m going to, as a stop-gap, use different colored markers on the clip viewer timeline to indicate used footage. Time consuming but, effective.

Thanks David. It does show as stereo in the browser. (The waveforms look slightly different in the viewer, too.) Pretty much sounds to me like, I just need a new mix. I appreciate your help. RK

Thank you, David, for the quick reply. I’m a picture guy more than a sound guy, obviously so, this makes sense on some levels but, I’m still uncertain about it. Is the ‘panned hard left’ situation for A1 normal and, if all was recorded correctly, it should remain as such (at -1) and NOT panned to 0? If I raise the track volume, as you suggest, it seems that would just raise all the instrument volumes together and still not address the faint guitar problem, relative to the others. Or, should the stereo mix from my sound man be re-mixed with the guitar volume boosted? Thanks again, R.

November 10, 2010 at 6:23 pm in reply to: Retouching video frames for FCP

As I understand it now, PS Extended does this very handily.
I may have to invest but, anybody got any real world experience with ‘Beauty Box’, ‘Electric Makeup Artist’, or any another movie auto-retouch plugin?

September 1, 2010 at 3:14 am in reply to: staccato-like progressive frame transition

Shutter already set to manual and 180 degrees.

If you think about it, film is “progressive” in a way… it exposes the frame completely in an instant so, why is it’s frame to frame transition so much softer than progressive video? And, video being digital, a plugin or application to deal with that specifically should be possible.

You mention the 5D and slower shutter speeds. You can’t go below a 30th of a second on a 5D. I still get that hard-edged transition at 1/30th of a second.

Thanks but, I’m still unconvinced this can’t be ‘fixed’ somehow.

April 28, 2010 at 8:52 pm in reply to: no audio in clip browser or transfer app

    OK, further testing…
when one external mic is plugged into input 2, the clip browser and transfer app will not play the audio portion even though it is actually there and will play fine in FCP.

If one mic is plugged into input 1, no mic in input 2, CB and TA play the audio no problem. Same result if 2 mics are plugged in or if no mics are in and internal mic is used. Seems cb and ta do not like it when there is only audio on channel 2. in my case anyhoo. Thank you guys for your responses.
