I notice when viewing footage shot in 24 or 30p mode on my EX1 or Canon 5D, the video has a very staccato-like, hard-edged frame to frame transition. I don’t mean hiccups or other anomalies associated with poor playback performance or the effect of high shutter speeds either but, rather the ‘normal’ way the video frames transition from one to the other during normal playback. Film has that soft, kind of fluidity from frame to frame. My question is: Does anyone know of any plugins or software that can mitigate this staccato-like look or, otherwise, blend these frames together more softly?

Try setting your shutter to 180 degrees, and make sure manual shutter is on.

It is all about frame rate and shutter speed, not a post plugin treatment. One of the reason interlaced is good for sport is the ability to capture more motion information, effectively doubling the frame rate.

I have been shooting with the 5D recently @ 25fps and I am aware of the need to use longer shutter speeds to induce blur on faster movements and slower camera moves. The price you pay for the progressive look is the reduced speed of pans and zooms to avoid that jittery look.

Shutter already set to manual and 180 degrees.

If you think about it, film is “progressive” in a way… it exposes the frame completely in an instant so, why is it’s frame to frame transition so much softer than progressive video? And, video being digital, a plugin or application to deal with that specifically should be possible.

You mention the 5D and slower shutter speeds. You can’t go below a 30th of a second on a 5D. I still get that hard-edged transition at 1/30th of a second.

Thanks but, I’m still unconvinced this can’t be ‘fixed’ somehow.

No it exposes the frame at the rate of the shutter speed and frame rate. It isn’t instant. There are expensive hardware processors that can add motion blur or reduce motion blur per frame. If you are after a plugin that does extensive pixel interpolating, then I don’t know of anything for FCP like that.
