  • Hi Ryan,

You don’t need both. The ATEM TVS has the same h264 hardware encoder as the H264 Pro Recorder.

    Thanks,
    Rich

    Hi David,

Not sure if you have already done this but I would recommend asking this question on the BlackMagic forums ( https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/ ), as the BMD staff seem to be spending most of thier time over there now.

August 9, 2012 at 1:53 pm in reply to: Recording the DVI out from a PC

    Hi Gary,

My solution to this problem was:

    H264 Pro-Recorder +
GFX Card (NVidia) with HDMI out (nb. DVI>HDMI was v.problematic) +
    MX Light

This allows me to record the output of the GFX card at 1920x1080p @ 60Hz on the same machine with a CPU overhead of about 2-4%. The H264 Pro-Recorder records at upto 30Mbps h264/aac, which although compressed is enough for my purposes (tutorial videos).

In fact, I wrote MX Light initially to solve just this problem.

MX Light is currently windows only, so for recording linux/mac desktop output you would need to run MX Light in a VM or use a second machine. nb. You dont need a powerful machine to record with, as the encoding is done in hardware & the data rate is low enough for normal/cheap hard drives.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Rich

  • Hi Charles,

I would recommend testing the MX Light demo available on the website, if you have the hardware available (TVS/ProRec).

MX Light can record & stream using just a few % cpu (on a core2 Q9450) but this depends on not having to re-encode the h264/aac stream generated by the TVS/ProRec.
The minimum bitrate of the hardware encoder is ~1.3Mbps, as such if you wish to stream over the internet using RTMP without having to re-encode, you would need a fast upload speed & a service which accepts high bitrates.
MX Light can re-encode the AV stream to achieve <1.3Mbps but this does require significant CPU power, naturally this is all dependant on your source material & the output resolution required.

    Hope this answers you question

  • Hi Jarod,

Looking at their support documentation this should be possible with a couple of minor tweaks to the standard UStream preset.

Please contact me via the MX Light website if you would like to test a preset for this.

    Hi Mike,
Once I have a solid foundation for RTMP streaming, it should be quite easy to create presets for services that use it eg. YouTube & UStream etc… So if Im right (fingers crossed) I will include a preset for UStream.

    Hi Pat,

I’m currently working on MX Light version 1.4, which will focus more on the streaming aspect. One of my aims is to provide additional presets, such as streaming to YouTube (& other services requiring RTMP streaming). If you would be interested in beta testing this latest version, please contact me via the website (https://mxlight.co.uk/contact).

    Thanks,

  • Hope you find MX Light useful & thanks for the heads up re the website. Shop is now back up & running!

  • Hi Jeff,

    Re: Point 5.

The H.264 Encoder in the ATEM Television Studio CAN be used for live streaming, when attached to a PC/MAC.

The built in hardware h264 encoder is reasonably capable, its just that the software (Media Express) doesn’t give the user full access to it & only supports recording.

As mentioned earlier in this thread there are scripts for the mac. For PC users there is https://www.mxlight.co.uk .

    Thanks
