  • Just guessing… but you most likely have a variable f-stop zoom lens… like an f4.5-5.6? Meaning that when you zoom in your f-stop on the lens changes. You need to get a lens that is the same f-stop all the way through the zoom range. The L series Canon lenses like this one are the ticket… but as you can see, the price goes up substantially for this feature.

    Good Luck!

    Assuming 30frames/second, a 40 minute 1080p ProRes 422 file will be about 50GB
If that is too big for you to handle you can do a 1080p ProRes LT and this will bring your file size down to around 35GB

If this is still too big you can try h.264 but i would stay ProRes for projection if you can.

I would not go DVCProHD. You will only save about 10 GB from ProRes 422 and in my opinion it is not worth the extra conversion.

You might want to download the AJA Data Calculator… it is a really great app and it is free.

    Good Luck!

To add to Shane’s excellent advice
When you export from FCP stay at 1080!…. and export a Prores 1080 422 file, the same as you edit with. This will give you the best resolution for your MASTER. If you are playing to a HD projector from a MacBook Pro via DVI this should look very nice. If your MacBook struggles to play back the 1080 ProRes 422 master (it shouldn’t if it is a newer MacBook and has FCP installed which is needed for the ProRes Codec) then as Shane suggests, FROM THE MASTER FILE make a hi data rate 1080 h.264 file and try that.

We did this (1080p ProRes master on a MacBook Pro) for a theater premiere and it looked great. 35 minute show in 1080p resolution played in QT (Full Screen mode) out DVI to an HD projector… Really nice.

Yes, the CS5.5 suite makes a lot of sense for you, but honestly…? if you are still on FCP5 and happy, you could upgrade to FCS3 and be blown away at the improvements from FCP5…. and be happy for another 5 years! Hehehe, Just poking a little fun at you.
Yes, I know they don’t sell FCS3 any more but you can find a copy or 2 out there on ebay or here at the Cow.

And I can say with a fair amount of certainty, that in five years EVERYTHING we are working with now will seem like the stone age and you can upgrade to the “newest, best thing out there” at that point…. ’cause, well…. maybe in 5 years FCPX will actually be a Pro app at that point. ;~)

July 17, 2011 at 3:44 am in reply to: Payment terms for editing network tv show

Yeah, we negotiated a per episode rate. W we would get 40% each time we started an episode and 60% each time we delivered and episode (payment due before we shipped to network) and we were working on a
2 episodes at any given point with staggered start and finish times. When we finished one we got that 60% plus the 40% to start the next one so there was 100% payment every time except the first and last episode….

    Worked out really well.

I would not agree to waiting so long to get paid unless you really trust these folks…. and even then it is a risk….

    Good luck!

    Thanks John,
I did not realize I was so behind with my Firefox updates! I will update to V5 and see what that does.
I will have to look into Hype for my web site needs. Is it commercially available?

    Thanks again for the info!
