Take a look at any of the camcorders that use the ACVHD Codec. They range from $699 and up.

Final cut studio can ingest AVCHD footage via “log and transfer” to 1080 ProRes and you are ready to edit in FCP. You will also need to invest in hard drives for archiving the footage you shoot but they are cheap and plentiful.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks Doug…

    This answers my question…

Another question… Is there a time that one would need the 2:3:3:2 pulldown rather than a 2:3:2:3? Is it there for different scenarios?

    Thanks

April 14, 2010 at 2:55 am in reply to: Saving old projects

    Hi Korry,

Are you media managing these projects before archiving? This will save a ton of space and only store the media you used in the project timeline, which, if you shot 3 hours of video for a 5 or 10 minute video, this is a huge difference in archive space needed. But the project would still need to be fairly short depending on your QT flavor, to fit on a single DVD data disc.

There really is not a an easy answer to this other than what David suggests. If your a pro, spend the money and do it right, if you are not, just output a master QT file of the project and delete the project. You most likely would not need to ever go back and re-edit.

A possible third option, if your media was captured from tape and all your reels were properly labeled in your capture process, you could just save the project file with out the media (after creating your master QT file) and if you need to go back and do a re-edit, just recapture the media from the original tapes from within the original project file (there is instructions on how to do this in the manual) and you are back in business.

If your media originated from a file based camera (P2, XDCAM ec) then you dont really have any option but to bite the bullet and purchase drives for archiving… Oh yes! and dont forget, you will need 2 Drives,… one for archiving and on for a backup.

    Hope this helps

April 13, 2010 at 6:57 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro Sync Problems

An update… I did the test and removed the slugs from the project and had ONLY the stereo track of audio with the timeline and the sync issue was still there. But hey, if the slugs solve the problem then I am good.
    Thanks for the help!

    Thanks Gary,
That makes perfect sense. It was a project that was brought to us in mid-edit for online edit and color grading and since solving the issue with the slugs I have wrapped up the project and have moved on. But definitely will be prepared for these challenges in the future.

It was however mixed in another studio on ProTools and I now have a stereo mix replacing the the original 8 tracks of audio. So in the interest of learning, I will go back to the project and remove the slugs and see if the issue remains, or is solved, using the stereo mix only in the project. It will be good to know.

    Thanks

April 7, 2010 at 5:38 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro Sync Problems

    Hey Paul,
I have had these issues as well… sometimes… but not always… I figured out that it was only when I had a blank spot in my video track it would go out of sync, then when I stopped and started again it was back in sync. I fixed this by putting a slug in my video track where I wanted black and this fixed my problem. No more sync issues.

Could this be your issue? Any cuts or fades to black (holes) on your video timeline?

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi All,
OK I have been following this issue for a while now and NEVER had a sync issue until this week! and *Bam!* All of a sudden my Kona3 output would be out of sync with my audio and canvas in FCP… stop the play back, re-start and it was back in sync. Drove me crazy for 2 days!… So I went back and re-read almost every post I could find on this issue.

Here is what I figured out and it FIXED MY SYNC ISSUES!

This particular project, I realized, “dips to black” quite a few times… just an innocent dissolve to “nothing” with a few seconds of black (no slug… just empty timeline) …randomly @ different amounts while music plays until the video fades or cuts back in… No Big deal, so i thought… but I took a look at my audio files used in the timeline and found that I had 3 different types of audio on the time line (16 bit/44.1Khz music files, 16 bit/48Khz XDCAM files and 32 bit/48Khz Red Cam audio files) which FCP had to deal with. This got me thinking and I realized that my sync issues were timed perfectly to my black sections. a one second hole in my video track on my timeline would amount to a one second sync delay to my audio…. a 3 second hole… a 3 second delay. so here is what I did…

I put a Slug under each of my gaps so there were NO EMPTY SPACES on my video timeline and that did it… No more sync issue.

Seems like when FCP is sending everything to the KONA3 card, if there is a blank spot on your video timeline it gets confused. The slugs filling the holes seems to do the trick.

    Hope this helps somebody.

March 30, 2010 at 7:54 pm in reply to: Mac Pro configuration for Red camera editing

Hi Jason, In your post you say:
    B) You will need to buy the Kona 3 if you want to put both the RedRocket and Kona card in one machine. The 4 PCI-E slots in your MacPro will look like this:

    Slot 4: RAID Controller
    Slot 3: Kona 3
    Slot 2: RedRocket
    Slot 1: 4870 or FX4800

Everything I have read and every one I have talked with about this say that you can not run a RedRocket and a Kona card in the same system, it is not possible… Has this changed? Is it now possible?

    Thanks
