October 18, 2010 at 10:16 pm in reply to: “Preview Disabled” Suddenly can’t capture in FCP7What I found is that my system is running just fine, it was me that had the fault 🙂
My issue began after a power outage and when I rebooted everything there appeared nothing I could do to fix it.
I tried all the search tools on CreativeCow but nothing.
Then, as I sat here and scratched my head, wondering what the gods had in store for me I glanced at my SonyHD Videocassette recorder, bugger it had reset itself to 60i NTSC when I work in 50i PAL! Such a simple obvious fix. Often times I find that is the case. It is actually good for me out here in the south pacific where there is not a technician within miles. I get to know my system way better than I did in Venice Beach where I had access to Hollywood at large. So there is my fix, hope this helps someone else.Richard Clark’s kiwicafe.com

as I said “It’s all a question of attitude.” I well remember the great New Zealand author, Katherine Kansfield who stated; ” listen not to the voices of other but do the hardest thing for you”, I still follow that. I pay no mind to what others do or think, keeps me focussed on what I do and think, simple really. Pity our so called leaders couldn’t embrace that concept at times 🙂

Of course “OLD” editors are employable, I am approaching 70, just turned 67 🙂 and this past year finished a couple of Indie feature films and a couple of short films and am now working on my own feature length Doc. It’s all a question of attitude. I began in film on a Moviola in the 60’s and kept evolving, flat beds until 1993 then back to USC where I fearfully embraced AVID and Computers. I designed a whole different console in a custom edit suite for myself in Hollywood and then in 1998, I embraced FCP and felt as though I were back in Film Editing mode. I have continued on FCP ever since and, while it’s not perfect, while it’s not a great editing tool, it works for me and I am totally comfortable taking on any sized project. I feel the real issue is that true film editors, those who learned the hands on craft of editing film have been taken over by producers who want eye candy and real story telling doesn’t need eye candy. Just my thoughts at 9PM on a monday night as I work in my studio.

okay kid, yep I can call you kid because that is what you are, a 14 year old kid. as a 14 year old you need to be out playing, exploring, reading, having fun. It was 10 years beyond you, age 24 that I found film and became a film editor, first in Australia, then New York, Hollywood and then my homeland New Zealand where, as I type I am ingesting 220 hours of my own doc into my 5 year old Mac desk top, I am writing on a 17″ macBook Pro. It took me 43 years to get to where I am and if anyone asked me if I would do it different I would honestly reply “NO!” Maybe I would have read more, especially the classics but then again with ADD it wasn’t easy to concentrate, I was a classic day dreamer. I am right where I am meant to be doing what I am doing.
Based on my own experience, this is not given as advice, I try not to do that, your life is your life to be lived as you experience it, not as someone else’s expectations.
Live your life, experience life and in 20 years, if you are lucky, you will have some life experience upon which to draw. Until then you are in learning mode. Mind you, I am still in learning mode. Do what you can with what you have. At your age i worked at all sorts of income producing work, milk runs, paper runs, etc,. Also, and this has been key to me, I read books. I was a book worm. That is where our story comes from. There is nothing new in life, there is nothing original, everything is a copy of something that has gone before, it’s simply people sharing their experience, strength and hope, period. In the meantime, get outside and live your life. It’s not without a certain irony that today I am editing a Documentary about the American West that I took two years to shoot in 2004 &5, as a kid I read westerns, especially Zane Grey. He was my muse as a child. That is what we need, something or someone who touches us deeply, we may not know it at the time but that is setting in motion our life’s work. I would highly recommend photography, writing, and some form of art, one where you use your hands, painting, drawing, sculpture, it may give you an unique voice if you do it well. What is your best subject in school, pay attention to it. Mine was comprehension and that is the basis of a good story teller, a good film editor.
Fell free to ask anything you like. All the very best for a good life.Richard Clark’s kiwicafe.com

It’s good to see the COW is still operating at a high level, I have been sorting myself out creatively and am sort of kind of back on track 🙂 good to see you are still involved and I love the presentation of your DVD. It works on my old tower, on my partners new iMac but not on my 17″ MacBook Pro, go figure. I will persevere, maybe it will magically pop open. Anyhow I love the content and that’
s the most important part. Talk soon, Richard.Richard Clark’s kiwicafe.com

will give it a try, this was a brand new disk delivered in New Zealand today, computer makes a buzzing sound as if it trying to read but no go, doesn’t appear to be scratched but will try another computer first.
** just looked at the surface of the Disk it appears to have some sort of marking which appears to be a stain toward the outside? never seen that before, thanx.
