“Preview Disabled” Suddenly can’t capture in FCP7
I was capturing several Mini-DV tapes from my Sony DSR-11 yesterday into FCP7 on my Mac Pro, then I got a warning that my scratch disk was almost full. I made the appropriate changes to the hard drive to make more room, then tried to capture again and suddenly all I get is “Preview Disabled” and I can’t capture ANY video from the deck.
I can capture from my Canon XH-A1 but I’d rather not do that due to wear on the camera.
Plus every now and then I get “capture encountered a problem reading the data” and I can’t capture a certain tape…any workaround for that? I even tried capturing using a “non-controllable device” and I still get the error and it stops recording…
To answer a question some may be thinking, no I am not capturing HDV video.
Of course this issue happens at a deadline for a Christmas video for my boss. Perfect timing…

Go ahead and capture from your camera. When you have no pending deadline you can resume trying to isolate the cause of the current issue. You’d have to digitize a whole lot of tapes to cause significant headwear.

Trash your preferences. Repair permissions. What drives are you using? How are they connected? Is the deck connected to the rear FireWire port? What settings are on the media? What settings in FCP? What happens when you launch the application? If it doesn’t recognize the deck, is the deck recognized in system profiler?

I also just ran into this issue. I was happily capturing clips from DV tapes via my Sony M10U Deck, Easy Set up is all DV PAL, I was doing fine and all the clips I managed to capture play back just fine. I will try trashing preferences and run Disk Utility, which I do often. Made no difference trashing preferences or running permissions. I captured 22 clips, no issues and then, voila, very frustrating. I am on a pre-intel Mac and so cannot upgrade my FCP! Any thoughts please?

Hi Tom,
I am having a problem with Preview Disabled also.
I am running FCP7.0 on a Mac Book Pro.
I am using a Sony deck DSR25 with firewire going to a LaCie external and then to the MBP. (The MBP only has one 800 firewire ;-( and therefore I have to loop through the external, which I want to use for the scatch anyhow.I am stumped. I have trashed and repaired, reinstalled and it is still not giving a preview although the deck is operated by Capture controls.
What do you suggest. (It is weird that so many posts are here on this subject and yet I can’t find a fix for this or find out what went south on the Preview.)

An M10U is a North American deck that’s used for NTSC. What exactly are you doing here?

Update FCP.
What settings exactly did you shoot on the tape? What settings are you using in FCP?
Is the deck recognized in System Profiler? What other devices do you have connected? How’s the drive formatted?

What I found is that my system is running just fine, it was me that had the fault 🙂
My issue began after a power outage and when I rebooted everything there appeared nothing I could do to fix it.
I tried all the search tools on CreativeCow but nothing.
Then, as I sat here and scratched my head, wondering what the gods had in store for me I glanced at my SonyHD Videocassette recorder, bugger it had reset itself to 60i NTSC when I work in 50i PAL! Such a simple obvious fix. Often times I find that is the case. It is actually good for me out here in the south pacific where there is not a technician within miles. I get to know my system way better than I did in Venice Beach where I had access to Hollywood at large. So there is my fix, hope this helps someone else.Richard Clark’s kiwicafe.com

The deck is multi format, because I also edit ntsc as well as pal it suits me just fine.
