I followed this thread with interest since I’ve always been disappointed with the DVD image quality from Compressor. I tried changing the setting to “Best” in resize filter, and am working from a DVCPROHD 1080i .mov file, but the quality remains the same as the default 90 min. setting from Apple. Sure, the DVD looks fine on an SD monitor, but attach it to a 46″ LCD (even using a Blu-ray player for it’s upscaling) and the picture quality suffers. My usual workflow is to burn the disk in my Pioneer DVD LX-1, albeit with it’s limited menu functions.

Thank you John, that was the fix. But why is ProRes writing files like this?

Thank you for that info. Does this require a specific board set from Edius or is this FCP compatibility soley software dependent?

October 31, 2008 at 2:16 am in reply to: HDX-900 1080 30p footage looks awful when digitized into Final Cut ProGentlemen,
this camera does not record 1080p, it is 30p over 1080i. When played back on a 1200a or 1400 deck, the progressive scan is still a 1080i 59.94 signal playout. Firewire playout of the tape, whether 720p or 1080i does not compare to the SDI output from the deck, IMHO. Even though this camera is native 720p, I feel the best picture is obtained by a deck playout over HDSDI (using 1080i recording) & (into a capture card) and not from the firewire output.Richard Boghosian

You want the best conversion from HD to SD – you use hardware. Nothing beats hardware, nothing yet IMHO. So, you output the video directly to an SD DVD recorder, like the sadly discontinued, but widely available, Pioneer LX-1 Recorder. Ah, but how to get a good HD to SD signal? Well, the Kona LHe I own is poor at best. So, you take an HDSDI signal from the Kona into the Panasonic 1200a and use it’s SD downconversion to get an excellent SD picture (and take the audio out from the deck’s outputs to avoid the 2 frame delay)

FCP “Text” makes lousy type in any timeline. use the “Boris Title 3d” that comes free with every FCP Studio package. Much, much cleaner

I read these posts and feel for you guys. No, really. I’ll bet if the HDX-900 came out next year, it would be touted as the solution to everyone’s challeges with P2 cards re: location storage/backup.

Unfortunately, there is a two frame delay in the secondary output in Kona products-so if audio is involved, you’ll need to deal with that. A much cleaner downconvert will come directly from the deck.
