Okay, I got picked to be the guinea pig for our first full HD shoot and edit. Shot with our HPX2000 to 720p60fps, and the footage and the GFX look BEAUTIFUL on my sony 23″ lcd edit monitor. Gorgeous.

Now, what is the best way to get this to an sd DVD? I know i can plop the seq into a sd timeline, render output, encode from within FCP, or out put full DVCPROHD movie, then encode through compressor, then to DVDSP. It will stay 16×9.

I have no problem letting it encode overnight, I just want to mimimize the yuck factor when the client looks at an SD dvd. It has been explained to them, the loss in quality, lower rez, all that, but the better the DVD can look, the better.

I’ve even heard of other encoders besides compressor with which to encode that may do a better job.

    Thoughts?

[Matt Gerard] “I’ve even heard of other encoders besides compressor with which to encode that may do a better job.”

I’ve worked with a lot of encoders and found that true if you don’t know how to tweak compressor.
A lot of folks just use the stock settings and they do work great for a lot of stuff but
    certainly not everything out there.

never use fcp to downsize. It can’t do it properly with bicubic quality.

export to compressor and make a copy of one of the apple presets.
change the frame controls section to be on and set the resizing to be highest quality.\

that should get you a nice DVD res clip.

Thanks for the tips and links, fellas.

Walter- I saw this workflow, but wasn’t sure that would get me the best possible looking file. I wasn’t sure if there was any obscure settings that would allow my video to encoded better, but take 3 times longer. Which normally I wouldn’t do, but in this case, I would like to get the best possible out of compressor.

Thaaaaat’s the stuff I’m looking for. I know it will take an obscene amount of time, but for this client it may be worth it. It also might be worth it to look into setting up a compressor render farm. I know, I know, its a pain in the arse, and sometimes it works, and then the moon shifts in the sky and then it doesn’t work, but it might be worth it.

    Thanks!

    your welcome.

it’s little nuggets o’ gold like that, that most people are looking for
but unable to get in a standard spiel about compressing for dvd.

You want the best conversion from HD to SD – you use hardware. Nothing beats hardware, nothing yet IMHO. So, you output the video directly to an SD DVD recorder, like the sadly discontinued, but widely available, Pioneer LX-1 Recorder. Ah, but how to get a good HD to SD signal? Well, the Kona LHe I own is poor at best. So, you take an HDSDI signal from the Kona into the Panasonic 1200a and use it’s SD downconversion to get an excellent SD picture (and take the audio out from the deck’s outputs to avoid the 2 frame delay)
