I need to make a direct dub from a panasonic 1200A deck playing a 1080i59.94 master and record on a beta sp using my bvw-70 beta sp deck. I can’t for the life of me get it to work either by going directly from deck to deck or going through my kona 3 card.

    Can someone clue me in?!

NOt sure you can use the Kona3 as a throughput conversion device u would have to capture then downconvert on the fly. To go deck to deck I would think u have to come out a SD monitor output that is composite with analog audio…

You can do this straight through the deck using the SD output if you have it.

If not, you can use the Kona 3 in Input Passthrough Mode to do the conversion.

On the AJA Kona Control Panel, set the Formats to Primary: 1080i/29.97 and the Secondary to 525.

On the Control Tab, set it to Input Passthrough.

On the Component Output (assuming you want to use Component out) set that to the Secondary Output (525)

    Now make your dub.

Absolutely you can. Any Kona product can be put into Input Passthrough mode for all manner of conversions. That’s one of the beauties of the entire product line. They work as stand alone converters in addition to working with FCP.

It’s actually one of the FAQ’s too.

Ok. I finally got video going in to the beta sp player. The only way I could get it to work is if I ran a cable from the Y/G/CVBS on the aja breakout box video monitor out port to the composite in on the beta deck. Is that the right way to do it?

Also since you are reading this thread walter maybe you can help me with a reference signal problem I am having with the 1200A deck. Whenever I plug in my reference signal coming from my horita bgs-50 box the signal gets all messed up. When it’s unplugged it works totally fine. Would you happen to know why that would be? I have an aja io, kona 3 with breakoutbox, a 1200a deck, and a bunch of other sd decks (dv cam, beta sp, beta sx) What is the best way to run all of those references signals? I’m not well educated on ‘looping’ etc.

Unfortunately, there is a two frame delay in the secondary output in Kona products-so if audio is involved, you’ll need to deal with that. A much cleaner downconvert will come directly from the deck.

Not in our experience. We do HD to SD downconverts on a weekly basis and if there was a delay, we’d have clients and engineers calling us.

Our downconverts have all been with the Kona 2 and Kona 3. Downconverts to BetaSP and DVCAM from 720 and 1080 timelines.

No clue what’s going on there. The 1200A and 1400 can accept either SD or HD reference and we’ve been using that exact same Horita box in our shop for about 5 years or so now without issue with the 1200A and 1400’s along with our SD decks.
