  • Thanks for answering.
I tried that, but when changing the project settings I just get some black bands on the left and right side of the image because the footage gets reduced in size. How to avoid that?

    Hi Dan,

I know the post is really old, but I am facing a similar issues so I thought first to try here. I shot a shoty film in 1920×1080 but I want the final output to be in 1.85. I have done all the editing process letterboxing the project (I created a .png file with two black stripes of 21 pixels each). I’ve done all the editing, and now it’s rendering time.

Well, I want to render two versions of the project, both in .mp4: one in 1920×1038 and the other 1280×692. So I chose that size in the custom settings. However, I get an unwanted result: the output is indeed in 1.85, but sometimes all the pixels are cut from above (and therefore I see the black stripe underneath the image) and sometimes from below. That really doesn’t make sense to me. Any chances you guys know what I am doing wrong?

    Thanks a lot!

  • Thanks, that is definitely the problem. The new output is perfect.

So what should I do? And why that doesn’t happen in other projects?

  • ..no I didn’t. Thank you for the hint. Gonna try and I’ll let you know!

  • Great, thank you. So you say Average 10mln and Max 15mln? Or Max what?
Sorry, rendering is not my favorite activity ever, I’m a bit slow in understanding 🙂

Also I noticed now another quite annoying problem with mp4 (in the final product there are some random flashes of images that shouldn’t be there, once in a while), but I suppose I’d have to open another thread for that…

  • That really makes sense. What setting should I use for the bitrate? I was using Max: 5mln, Avg: 4mln (as I used to do in Premiere Pro, as long as I remember). What would you suggest?

The video you posted has a great looking film grain, that’s for sure. Mine might be a little worse also ’cause I’m using Vegas own plug in…

Also, when I said “let’s say Vimeo” I kinda meant “Vimeo”.
