  • The switch seems unnecessary unless the server computer is located in another room and needs to be wired out. Otherwise, a really long ethernet cable would be just fine. I wouldn’t mix an intern machine and a server. Let the server be just a server, you’ll have less problems. I do think having a dedicated network for the server and 2 editor computers would help with keeping it simple. Then if another editor needs to pull footage to say, a macbook pro, they could do that without needing to plug into the server or one of the editor setups. Looks like a good idea. Might switch up my home setup after seeing this.

I would guess the file size is too big to edit directly off the drive via 1394. I’ve done 5D files from thunderbolt and firewire, and it lagged a lot with firewire. Try moving the files to your internal drive. If it works then the files are to big to edit from the drive. If it doesn’t then you may have corrupted your CS6 install or you need to redirect your scratch disk. Premiere CS4 had a tendency to get confused if you move your scratch disk location. I’m new to CS6 so I don’t know if they fixed it but that could be the problem.

Whenever I do this, I bring the shot into Adobe After Effects and use the wiggle command. I’ve never done it in motion, but it’s the same as the randomize motion plugin. I prefer AAE though. Feels like I have more control over it.

Using Apple Color (or anything similar), you just need to bring the highs to a more yellow tone (since there is already a red tone in the skin). If needed you can add some orange to the mids, but that’ll add an orange tint to your gray background. For the shadows/lows, I’d usually add some dark blue/purple, but very scarcely. It just helps make the warm tones look warmer. Other than that, play with contrast and some light filters.

The new AVID is a little buggy on SL. I love Lion. As long as you clean install, there should be no problems. Mountain Lion should be out late next month. If you can wait, you probably should.

There were a few problems right after 10.7.2 came out but it was fixed a while ago. You should be fine. I suggest burning Lion to disk and doing a clean install. It gets rid of all the SL files from before. A lot of people I know had problems when they did an upgrade but none had problems with a clean install.

It’s really easy. If that’s the preunbody MBP it’s a little harder, but I’ve done a few Mac upgrades. Uni and pre-uni and both are fairly straight forward. Just discharge yourself on the drivebay before you touch anything. Also, upgrade the RAM while you got it open.

June 25, 2012 at 1:44 am in reply to: Need Advice re: AVID/Mac Mini

Personally, I’d go with the 2 drive system. The second drive is always beneficial (I use a 2011 MBP and I wish I could have 2 drives along with the disk drive. I just use a few externals for backing up important stuff). Get the lowest end HDDs in the 2 drive and replace the boot drive with a small SSD. Then use one as a backup drive and the other for storage. Just don’t get your SSD from Apple. I’ve used Lion Server and nonserver I really haven’t noticed much difference. If you need people to be able to remotely connect to you, go with server, if not, don’t bother. As far as adding drives, If the config page on Apple’s site doesn’t let you choose to add a second drive, or select none for the 2nd drive, you won’t be able to. Hopefully that helps.
